My YJ has started to leak from the rear of the oil pan. No oil is coming from inside the bell housing. Would a rear mail seal leak drip out of the bellhousing?

i had the same problem and there were 2 things i did to make it stop - first i tightened a little bit the oil pan bolts (I think you need to take the inspection cover off for cople of bolts). That fixed some but not completely, i kept looking for a leak and eventually turned out that the bolt on the valve cover located right under the MAP sensor (the one closest to the firewall) was loose, tightened that and the drops of oil appearing on my oil pan were gone after that. |

That bolt was loose on mine too. Leak was going down the drivers side and could not be seen without removing the head. Which is what i was doing when I found the loose bolt. |

That bolt was loose on mine too. Leak was going down the drivers side and could not be seen without removing the head. Which is what i was doing when I found the loose bolt.

last week i was chasing some drops on the oil pan, looked at everything, i did the oil pan bolts when i replaced the transmission and it did improve (was not leaking as much) but still had a drop or 2 on the ground next morning - i remember reading something about the rear valve cover bolt (which was this ^ post you listed) and sure enough i could move it by hand, saved me a lot of trouble as i was ready to drop the pan and replace the gasket  - thanks for sharing that. |

Right after I bought my jeep I found that there was tons of oil around the valve cover. All but two bolts on the valve cover were tight! So I retorqued them all and found that the one close to the fire wall likes to come loose a lot.

Got this done this weekend. A few oil pan bolts were a bit under torque and several valve cover bolts were completely loose. Now I just have to wait to see if it worked (it was a very slow leak, a few drops every few weeks).
