Something I just won at auction - $1200

1986 CJ10A, 14,636 miles, 5344 hours, diesel, auto, ps, pb.  No air compressor, no hydraulic pump, straight front axle (non-drive), 4 pintles, sliding rear window, fiberglass top, non-running.
More pics: http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d99/jagular7/CJ10A/

Now gotta figure out how to get it home and check out why its not running.

From what I've found out in the past on these things: Nissan diesel, 727 auto, 208 with case linkage in 4x4low and chain missing (no linkage in cab), D70 rear (really wide), 4.88's, locker.

That will be cool if you're able to convert it and make it road worthy.

personally i have mixed feeling s on this vehicle.. its would be a kick ass tow vehicle.  but it doesn't look like a jeep other than the inside adn the fenders tell the front... would be sweet to mock up a more traditional jeep grill on it... defiantly looks tough..

Why does everyone want to use it as a tow rig?  The stock wheelbase is really too short.  Top speed is something like 45-50mph.  To get the high pulling capacity, they have a NP208 transfer case that is locked into 4Lo with no front axle.  It will need a lot of custom work to get it turned into a 4wd Jeep.  Stretch the rear out a bit and put a chopped short bed on it...

Wow, lots of interest, eh?

First in the plan is to explain to my wife the expense charge on the cc. That's the first hurdle. Next, get it home then figure out its overall condition.

Initial thoughts were to configure 4wd with matching axles, add wheelbase, reconfigure suspension, and add rear bed (flat or conventional). The D70 rear axle is 'WIDE' at 75", so most just rid of it as its easier/cheaper to add matching diffs. Found the cab is CJ based so CJ/YJ grilles/hood will work. Don't know about the windshield frame or hard doors. Cab top and actual tub (rear cab) are different than CJs. The frame is suppose to be similar to the J-trucks design which means the rear hangers are adjustable and outside the frame, thus reconfiguration of the suspension. I'll know more once I get it actually home. Its 2+ hours from here.

looks little heavy for off road mus.. but then again if you put an improvised bed in the back and a front axle maybe some different bumpers it could be a sweet offloading machine.

Hard to tell how small it was from the pics as I've never seen one before, would be kind of a pain in the ass with a 80" wheelbase. Thought it was longer like a FSJ. Definately make an interesting wheeler though, nice head start with a diesel.  I like the bobtail rear with the built in tool box. From what I read they used these to pull planes around, tons of low end torque and gutless on the road with the 3.3 diesel. Aside from getting it running, what were you planning on doing with it?

Here's a better side shot of one for those like me who thought it was bigger...

Don't get rid of the grill and fenders!  If you have to, you can use a CJ grill and have the headlights on the grill, but honestly, I'd rather have wider headlights and actually work.  The doors have export YJ.  Notice they are square in the upper rear corner.  These are different then YJ full doors.

if I had a project, I'd consider sourcing a Corporate 14 bolt and D60 or maybe a Jtruck D44/D60 combo.  Go full width then wrangle them in with negative offset wheels.

This is the coolest one I've seen;

Here is a LINK to one that is being reconfigured right now. Wagoneer-like frame, Wagoneer axles bolt right in, reconfiguration on rear suspension, longer wheelbase, swap in 208, custome bed design, 34x9.5s due to the full front fenders.....

Cost? I got it for under $1200 total ($1007+10%+tax). Right now, I'm just trying to get a buddy with a trailer to go get it with me as I don't have a tow vehicle and trailer. I still got to explain it to my wife. If I can get it to run cheaply, I'll spend time getting it together with a bed, longer wheelbase, 4wd, etc. I've already got another project sitting in the garage and a running TJ on the street. I still think it was cheap enough. The diesel is suppose to get better than 25 mpg properly geared/tired.

Why? I jokingly bid on it. It was originally listed for an auction back in late December. I've got buddy who took a Tracker and built it for WERock competition. I suggested he go with something like this so he suggested I bid on it. Then it got pulled due to not being listed as sealed bid. It was re-listed as sealed bid and closed last Friday. I sent in my bid and won. I was surprised as these would sell for over $2k or more non-running in the past.

Hmm, that does look nice.  I like how they used Wagoneer leafs so it moves the axle automatically rearward.  Is that guy going to put a Jeep trailer on the back?

Hi there first prime the fuel system. Then see if it has some sort of electric shut off on the injection pump and see if theat has power to it.
If so loosen one of the injector lines crank it see if it spits diesel if so give her a little go go juice like wd 40 or some alchohol based parts cleaner or starting fluid. I like tha last one least since its kinda harsh on the engine.
Some spray cans of brakecleen make a good starting fluid also makes em rattle in a heart beat
