Rearranging the engine bay for the snorkel
« on: April 27, 2009, 09:34:44 AM »
OK, so according to the instructions of the Safari Snorkel, in case of a YJ, the windshield washer fluid bottle needs to be relocated from the driver's side (in front of the ECU) to the side of the battery tray.  I am not thrilled about this location, as (1) I would have to take out the bottle to change spak plugs, distributor, etc, and (2) the bottle would be literally resting on top of the heater hoses (I doubt the bottle will be able to stand up to the heat).

Because I changed my fan to the e-fan, I though maybe I can install it to the frame in front of the engine on the passanger side; how do you guys feel about this?  Good idea, or stupid idea?

Here's where I am thinking of placing it:

YO - you dont need to put it on frame.  I JUST did this with my 1995 YJ.  take the bracket they give you.  put it on the FENDER well of passenger side.  Ill go get a pic i just a minute for you.  you can use the 2 bolts they provide for when it goes into battery tray.  it is cake.  drill 2 small holes, grind just a tad, it with with tad paint and your in business.  you have to extend your wires manually anyway with cuts and solders, just get some vacuum hose from LOWES or Home depot that fits that extension nipple and your good.

there is a flat spot on the fender/firewall the bracket fits GREAT.

\looks like you may have something in the way though

Thanks, Bestos; I think I will try to relocate the AC (what's that called? evaporator?) and put that on the frame (I dont need frequent access to it, and the lines are already long enough); I will also have to relocate my cruise control vacuum servo a bit higher, but again, nothing to worry about.  On the other side of the engine bay, I intend to move the cruise control vacuum reservoir (I can also move it closer to the cruise control on the other side if I so choose) and will relocate the brake booster vacuum reservoir below the snorkel where the windshield wiper bottle currently is at now.  With that, I should be ready to go with the snorkel (well, except for the lights, but that's a different subject!).  Here's the pictures for what I just explained:

I think since the evaporator and the brake booster vacuum eservoir do not neet frequent maintenance (like the plugs!), it will end up being better (more practical) this way (plus, I got the bottle out of the way if I ever decide to put a turb on this thing!).

i dont have AC (as can be seen) or break vacuum or even cruise vacuum, so i got lots more room, dop u wanna see a pic this evening of the snorkel entering inside my engine bay?  youll see how much room it actually takes up...

Yeah, those did not come with the Jeep...  Well, the AC did, but the rest I added.

That would be good.  From what I measured, I should have enough space on the bottom for the big vacuum reservoir, but I would appreciate to be able to see it installed...

Well, final result was that the "something in the way" got moved and I used your suggestion; thanks for the pics!  Here's how the final result looks (sorry about the crappy pictures, but I was using a cel phone camera with flash, it was night, and the Jeep was already inside the garage because I leave for Tokyo tomorrow morning!):

ENGINE BAY - PASSANGER SIDE:

I got lucky in that all the extensions provided with the kit where actually long enough to get to the water bottle's new location without needing to lengthem them any more (I actually had to CUT the water hose).  As you can see, I had to relocate the cruise control to below where the ARB compressor is, and I also mounted the AC condenser (or whatever it is) on the frame rails; I actually had to make three holes and thread them, because it was IMPOSSIBE to get a nut in there!

ENGINE BAY - DRIVER SIDE

Here I had to move the cruise control's vacuum reservoir under the air box, and the brake booster reservoir next to the evap canister infront of the ECU.

OUTSIDE

This is why I had to remove the windshield hinge mounted lights and put them in the hood hinge:

Anyway, I am very happy with the results, and everything is running as it should.  Now tomorrow I got almost 24 hours of flight time to relax in the comfort that this got done!

Next up, new brake lines and hawk pads (already in the garage waiting for its turn to get marked from the TO DO list!).
