Finally USING the Jeep!

« on: July 18, 2009, 01:39:00 PM »

OK, so ALMOST is the key word here (and it does not seem to be going away anytime soon!), but here is what the Tropical Explorer looks like as of today with the new Warn Trail Flares:

The only VISIBLE change remaining is the A to Z Fab rocker guards, which are getting Line-X'ed as we speak (I also need to instal the Mopar Cam, TCG inertia ring, replace the timing chain, replace the clutch, and extend the spare's bump stops).

I opened the hood prior to that shot to get to the compressor, but I decided one more shot, so during that shot, I closed only one latch!  Surprised you caught it, though.  It was closed by the time I drove back home, so dont worry!

hey, looks great - got a question for you as i can see you got some new nice and shiny poly bump stops in this pic: where'd you get them and for how much (and how big are they over stock)?

I got them from Quadrate (click here to see the Q'tec page).  They are 1" longer than stock, but I like them for other reasons as well:

  • They are not rotted like the OEM one I had on
  • They dont have the hole in the middle where they meet the frame, so the frame will not rust (as it was starting to do; I had to scrape, sand and paint prior to installing thee, paricularly in the front)
  • They have the impact slot, which cushions any axle impact to the bump stops
  • They just look much better!!!!

I spent about $100 on these, and the fit is perfect.

mine are also rotted and these look way better - will check them out and hopefully order some today. Took one off yesterday in the back and i had to bring out the shop vac to clean the rust that fell off from under there.

That's a Hanson Offroad bumper; I got it directly from them (they are not cheap, though).  Q'tec sells it as well, but the shipping was cheaper if I bought direct.

Yeah, I know...  Problem is South FL is not exactl known for rugged terrain; it is flat as a pancake here!  And that pic was taken at a quary, mind you!  Maybe I'll get some bette pictures down in Panama or Costa Rica.

You setup should be a lot of fun to have in Costa Rica and Panama, Felipe.   By the way, besides the shipping costs, does it cost more to buy after-market parts online and have them shipped there vs. the U.S.?  I just noticed you seemed like you put a lot of money in to your 4banger before making your move down there; was wondering if there were tax advantages or something like that involved in building things up up here vs. down there?
