Well this is an older thread but I'll jump in - on my 4.10 gears and 34's I loved the trails but was starting to not enjoy driving on the street and highway.  I was going to Outer Banks from Ohio and really wanted smaller tires for the street.  I tried to find some stock steel rims with 235/75's or something, but couldn't put it together in time, so I got black steel Cragar's and 31" A/Ts.  Then I sold the Swampers for what I had in them (bought them used) so it all came out even Steven.

It is great on the street and highway, although in the mountains on 7% grades I would still have to hit the 4-ways and drop to 40mph in 3rd.  I have been wheeling on the 31s twice now, and yesterday I went over all the same stuff as the other guys with 33's or 32's.  With the approach/departure and belly clearance of a 4" lift and the diff clearance of the 31's I have had a great time crawling up or down off ledges, and crawling over stumps etcetera.  With the rear locker and the light weight of the 4banger and 31's (they are half the weight of the 34" swampers) the YJ is very nimble on obstacles.

I did manage to flatten the bottom of my fancy polished stainless 3" Gibson exhaust tailpipe, so now it doesn't look like mall crawler exhaust :)

Anyways I'm now a big fan of 31s and 4" lift on 2.5L 4.10-geared Jeeps...
