Welp picked this up a couple weeks ago.  Its a 2005 Ford F350 XL with a 6.8L v10, 5 speed torq shift auto, 10.5 rear.

Notice Factory trailer brake controller

the thursty V10

I'm on the search for a decent trailer...so far since I have had the truck, I've done a oil change, rear diff fluid change, new air filter, spark plug change, fuel filter change.  Whats left to do, coolent flush and fill, change tranny fluid.  The power steering fluid looks kinda nasty so I wanna change that out.

Should do fine hauling the YJ, camping gear and some spare parts down to the badlands.

Having spent the last couple of years driving an 05 PSD and seeing 13-14 mpg out of it I'm shopping for a V10 truck too.  A YJ on a trailer is like 6k pounds and the PSD is over kill and the cost to maintain it is MUCH higher.
The V10's average 10 mpg city and about 13-14 highway.

I have something similar as a tow vehicle. But its the 6.0l diesel, F350 crew, auto, XLT. 135k miles. I've put so far an extra $3.5k into it to for running issues in the past 2 yrs. Exhaust gas recirculation delete, cat delete, programmer (egr delete CEL), coolant and oil by-pass filters, and now I'm looking at $3k for replacing injectors. Since its a c&c, it doesn't have a side saddle poly tank (side of frame). It has a center rear tank that is metal. Guy working to replace the injectors will pull the tank, clean it out, and epoxy the inside. His experience shows the tanks rusts and this creates issues with fuel pump and injectors.

Its worth something like $19k. I've tried to sell it for $14k but have no interested parties. Getting 10 mpgs towing sucks. I've been told injector replacement will provide 5-7 mpgs towing and more not towing. Got a 40 gal tank and 3-4 long trips this summer. I should make the money back in savings on fuel, hopefully.

If I was to look for a toter, I'd look for a gas capable of pulling 9500#s loaded. That's the V10s of Fords (truck/van), 6.0l GMs (truck, tahoe, Suburban), and not quite sure of the Dodges (but assume the Hemis). I would want as long wheelbase as I could, be able to park it in normal places (couldn't with the c&c due to city ordnances), be decent unloaded in mpg, and comfortable in all conditions.

Once my diesel is 'healthy' as they can get for a 6.0l Ford, I'd expect 100k miles again easily. I looked into trading 'down' and 'up' but dealerships wouldn't give me enough to pay it off.

Good luck with your new Ford. I had troubles with the integrated trailer brake controller. I bypassed it with a jumper pigtail and used a standard brake controller. I still have the 'TBC Fault' in the codes.

I would of loved to gotten a diesel, however there weren't any I could of afforded.  Plus I don't tow enough to keep a diesel happy.  From my research the V10 doesn't get any worse then what a 5.4 in the same truck would get as far as MPG's.  So why not get the extra power?  This truck is paid for so no loan on it.  I'll drive it till it goes and then maybe by then I can afford a nice crew cab 4x4 diesel truck..

The only pickup that gets good milage with a diesel engine is the Dodge, but their auto tranny is for the birds. The old Fords with the T444 E engine are darn near indestructable but get about 14mpg at best and worse towing. The VT365 or 6.0l diesel in the Ford trucks is a POS always has problems with injectors, egr coolers and lots of trouble with the connectors for the high pressure oil system that fires the injectors. Some also have problems with the idler gear for the powersteering and fuel pump

I think I will still go with a powerstroke though when its time for a new truck, really I think it all depends on how you maintain your stuff..

I've got the 7.3L in a '99 F350 CC LB 4x2.  I don't know where you get your mileage numbers but my truck empty will get 18-20mpg and towing ~6,000-8000lbs 15-16mpg.

UPS does plenty of maintenance on their trucks, Corn Chucker knows that the VT365 is a piece of crap that is why it was only made for about 2 years, they gave UPS
an extend waranty on these for 225.000 miles on parts only to retain their business.
The old 6.9 and 7.3 as well as the T444E are all good strong engines. A 7.3 with a ATS turbo will flat haul ass, any diesel dually crewcab that smokes the duals with ease taking of has good power in my book

i have a 04 cummins that is still runing strong at 90,000 miles right now bone stock only problem ive had out of it was the exhaust rusted out right before the muffler so i gotta get that fixed i dont normaly tow the heep unless it decided to self destruct but every time ive towed it ive gotten between 19-21 mpg depending on the speed and if im in the mountians or not.  it gets 16.5 with a truckbed camper that ways 2500lbs by what my dads told me (its his camper) and pulling a double jetski trailer and will cruz at 75mph like theres nuthing back there.  Gotta love the gas milage of that engine and yes the biggest gas engine dodge puts in there 2500 or 3500 now is the 5.7l hemi
