The wonderful state of California failed my Jeep on emissions today.
The Nox is my particular problem, both at 15 and 25 mph.
Engine is bone stock and never been even close to failing before.
Motor is in pretty good shape at 180k miles, but still has original CAT.
Any suggestions?

Replace the cat. Cats are probably good for 100K or about 10 years. If your exhaust is stock, I'd go with a bolt-on Magnaflow. You might have a little trouble getting it off the muffler but it's worth it, I think. It's a PITA to deal with a welded exhaust and mods later down the line. The only problem is that the CA-Legal cat costs $100 more than the 48-State. Funny since I passed emissions with one from before they made a CA specific cat.

Yup, that's what I'm thinking.
$208.00 for the Cat, $150 to install.
Previous owner had the whole system welded.
Will put some miles on it before retest.

They will probably cut the flange off the downpipe and weld it directly to the cat.
If the flange is still there, you might consider getting a bolt-on cat-back like the DynoMax for $185 and installing it yourself.

Yea, at some point the previous owner welded up all the slip joints, no flanges.
When they put on the new Cat today it had to be welded up.

The V Groove, just after Lil Sluice. Wasn't paying attention and went up the wall too far and the rear tire fell into a hol. Then it flopped on it's side. It was a very slow flop.

Well after a new Cat it passed, just barely.
Still very high on the NOX.
They said it was running too lean preventing the Cat from working properly.
All other smog levels were way below average.
Checked for exhaust leaks before the Cat, nether the muffler shop or I could find any.
If it's too lean could it be injectors (original), 02 sensor (replaced after a cracked manifold 4 years ago),
weak fuel pump (original)?
The smog station told me it was most likely carbon build up from running cheap gas.

Do you ever take the Jeep on long highway trips? That helps get rid of the carbon. Or else seafoam.
You can check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail. There's a schrader valve. You just need to get a fuel pressure gauge or set up a permanent one on the fitting. That will tell you if the fuel pressure is correct. Might want to run some FI cleaner through the system. Or else get new injectors.

That's a pretty good idea!
I wonder if running a hotter plug for awhile would do anything.

Yup, running stock Champions right now.
