Here are some pictures of the Pre 91 Throttle Body Spacer going on an 89 YJ for road testing. Pulling the studs out of the manifold was a hardest part, I recommend a quality stud puller for this job because using 2 nuts locked against each proved really really hard and you dont want a broken stud or stripped out mounting hole. The studs get replaced with (4) 5/16-18X2" bolts which are larger then what Jeep used on the later model Throttle Bodies.

What's the bore size? Looks kinda small. :puzzled:

I believe it was matched to the gasket. ALthough seeing the opening, it could have been opened up. Since it's still a prototype, it still can. I'd measure the bore and then make note of if. Run what you got and see if there is any change. Then bore it out ot make another to compare.

Yes, it was matched to the gasket which makes a great template, but actually the bore has a parabolic curve which we wanted to test. Once we are happy with the performance and torque we hope to run off 100 units for sale to the public.

Are these going to be tested on a flow meter, or on an engine on a dino :?:

Wish I had that option but I am just a Mechanic who likes Jeeps and has a friend with a machine shop. There are plenty of large companies who have already done dyno testing on TB spacers, they are an old performance Hot Rod trick that's been around a long time for Carburators, and now for TBI, EFI, & MFI systems. I have found you can buy a spacer for almost any car or truck on the market. All I want is a spacer to fit the hole pattern on our Pre 91 2.5L Jeep Throttle Body. Most likely I will sell some through this forum & on Ebay which will be a straight smooth bore with the same thickness as the unit PowerAid sells for the 91-01 2.5L engine to enhance mid-range power & torque for us 4bangers running bigger tires. I think many companies shy away from the Pre 91 Jeep TBS due to the fact there are studs mounted on the intake which must be removed making the job alot more involved then just a bolt-on spacer and longer replacement bolts. If you snap off a stud or it strips the manifold during removal you have a big mess. During my 89 Mod it looked like thread-lock was used when Jeep put the studs into the aluminum manifold, then add years of heating & cooling, maybe some corrosion and they can be tough to remove so after I got them out I ran a tap down the holes to clean them up nice and a flat file on the deck, then with 2 new gaskets and 4 new bolts the rest was easy. well im glad i have a stud puller then... that is if i do get one of those spacers...
-
Any idea when they will be available?
-
I'm interested as well. Thanx!
-
I will keep everyone posted, when we get the power and torque range correct we will run off a bunch. I am hoping to gain some mid-range torque at highway speeds to help running those big tires. Next week I am off from work and will have some time to work on it.

You're the man.
-
SUP!
how's that spacer going?
-
i second that question.
patiently waiting,
nate

i thrid that question

Sorry I am so slow guys, I get day off from work tomorrow and will be doing some mods on it. I need to open the bore up more and then reinstall and test another 2 weeks.
-
I'll give this a bump so you everyone sees this. You got your own thread now. :thumb:

Thanks!
I was wandering guardian what have been your impressions so far on the test spacer?
thanks again

Status as of 10/10/06, headed over to the machine shop Friday and pulled the spacer out to change the bore size. While we had it all torn apart we made some precise measurements on the inake and throttle body bore diameters. We then proceeded with making the changes to the drawing in solidWorks, created some new CNC code and reworked the spacer. I have now been running it about 4 days and can feel a bit more midrange power from the spacer mods which now has the bore matched to both Intake and Throttle body openings. The intake opening diameter was larger than the throttle body diameter so there is a nice outward taper to the spacer bore. At this point I dont feel inclined to do much more on it and need to decide if we want to run a small quantity of units for others to try.

I'm game! :D
let me know what you need.
-
are you realy just not inclined to do more or is it that you jsut bought an new jeep :stick: lol.. jk... i think id be up for this spacer if you made osme..
-
Have you any suggestions on further mods or tests I can do which wont cost me alot of money?
-
I would just keep the spacer simple and use a straight bore. Not much else other then maybe adding a larger TB or maybe cnverting to a modern coil would be exclusive to a TBI.
-
That is basicaly what we have, since I am matching the spacer bores to the intake and TB there is a slight taper because the bore size of the intake is slightly larger and I did not want a lip for airflow to hit.
-
would it be possible to make an adaptor that would accomodate a different or maybe larger tb?
-
BUMP!! :D
-
An adapter could easily be made but you may want to open the bore on the intake manifold to prevent restriction. I have thought about making an adapter which would allow mounting a post 91 TB to the pre 91 intake but more research would be needed.

A lot more research would be needed. Remember the pre-91's are TBI and not MPFI. If you really want to go MPFI, you could swap intakes and do the whole fuel rail, PCM, harnesses, the works to convert it. Otherwise, you'll end up with a MPFI TB and no way to get gas into the engine.

That is a problem!

Make one and sell it to me and I will gladly be your spokesman.

My 87 is drooling over the possibility of a spacer. How is it going?
