VM Motori engines are about as big a piece of junk as the Chevy Vega, or the Yugo engines

The only real problem with the 2.8L CRD is that the EGR tends to fail on them.  This is not a cheap part and tends to continue to fail.  Engine won't run without the EGR.

is the ECU cutting it off when the EGR goes bad?

I believe so.  Although I've heard you can disable it.  I know Mopar Skunkworks did this with their '2.8L CRD Crate".
