trans problems ???wtf?
« on: July 23, 2014, 08:41:07 PM »
Gentlemen, a '98 TJ 2.5L auto, probably a 30RH TorqueFlite. Mileage, 110K. Trans is starting to make sounds I don't want to hear. Metal-on-metal. Or rather tin-on-tin. Not all the time.
Is there a 'better' trans that will bolt in? Or should I go re-man? I was told that with a re-manufactured trans 'everything that caused them to be crappy in the first place is up-graded and fixed'.
This trans is used behind Mopar slant-6 (gobs of torque), the AMC-type inline-6 and Mopar 318 & 360 V-8s. How in the world could my dinky little 150CI 4-banger tear this trans up?
Thanks all. Hunter

Check your band adjustments.  There isn't much in an automatic that makes a metal on metal sound.

IMHO the 4 cyl is harder on much of the power train, the wider spacing between the power pulses produces a lot of harmonics, for instance I'm on exhaust system #4.. In 220K miles.. All stress cracks not rust..
