Friggen camshafts are giving me the shaft!
« on: August 21, 2014, 07:38:51 PM »
So what's the deal with just buying an aftermarket camshaft? Only two places on earth seam to list them and both of them want way more then what they are worth.

So I contacted Oregon Cam Grinding and asked if they could reproduce the MP P4529658. Ken there asked what the grind was and said basically it shouldn't be a problem. Or they could just make me a cam to there grind spec. So I contacted another user of this board that owns such cam. He took a picture of the label and pm'd it to me. I forwarded that info to the cam grinder. His response was. We will need the duration @ .50" to give you an accurate profile comparison. And by centerline do you mean lobe separation or intake lobe centerline?

The specs I gave him.

Lift. .450/.450
Duration. 256/256
Overlap. 40
Centerline 106

Does anyone have the full specs for one of theise cams or maybe the .440 lift?
I have searched everywhere for the full spec card but have come up with nothing!

Yea I looked at that cam. I think for what I want it's a tad aggressive. I want something that I can install with a new set of OEM springs. That and they just plain want to much money for what you get. I have never payed over $150. For a bare 4banger cam.

Ok, so I've been scouring the Internet looking for the complete grind specs for that stage III .450 cam and have come up with nothing. Everything I find is just advertised lift and duration.

So I was reading some AMC sites and they would refer to the 2.5 nothing more then a 4.0 with the center two cylinders missing. I know that's not completely true but close. So I compared the OEM 91-95 cam grind specs to the same years 4.0 and sure enough they were exact. I then looked up the offerings Mopar had for purple cams for the 4.0l. I found that they offered the same advertised lift/duration as the 2.5 stage I and II 240/.430 248/.440. I stopped looking at that point because I think stage I or II would suit my needs better. I found this spreadsheet that showed many different 4.0l complete grinds. http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/Jeep4.0Camshafts.htm and the complete grind info for both the Mopar stage I and II are listed. Also you notice that Isky has a 4.0 offering .450/.450 252/252

I just Whent to  Hesco's site and looked at the rvob6 cam and the grind is exactly the same as the rvob4.
So I'm going out on a limb and am goring to give the cam grinders the specs for the stage I Mopar cam and see what they say.

Let us know.  I'm getting to the point I need to do a ring Job.  That would be a great time for a new cam.

That's the exact reason I'm looking so much into camshafts. My motors down to about 100 psi across the bord. It's funny that it's that low. The oil was changed every 3k and driven by an old man untill I got it. But I do have to admit I have revved it pretty hard a few times when I've needed wheel speed in low range.

Contact Clay Smith Cams.  I believe they still list cams for the 2.5 and I believe were actually the grinder for Hesco and Clifford.

I have the Hesco RVOB and its not that wild. no idle lope at all.

It IS ground by CLay smith ,, last I checked though CS wont sell the RVOB grind cam direct due to ther grind being developed by Hesco.. Good luck though..

My cam was drop shipped form Clay Smith even had their decal in it..

Anybody ever pull the trigger on having a cam ground?  May be needing a rebuild soon.

I did not have mine ground, but I do have a .450 lift 256 duration Mopar High Performance camshaft...  Cant say it makes a HUGE difference, though.  I also wish the torque would be a little lower (mine starts pulling at around 2.5K RPM)
