Title: Cat question
Post by: barrettsyj on July 08, 2011, 08:40:01 PM
I know that it is a federal law but not checked in my county. So questions as anyone every removed there's. And did it help or hurt? Time to change mine out and was wondinging if it would hurt the 2.5 to just get rid of it.

Mine runs great without it.

even if they don't check it, if you ever end up in a shop they won't let you take the car out until a cat is installed. And you might end up with a fine if they report it, but not sure how that works.

I doubt you'll see any change in HP, except maybe on the top end and will probably lose some low-end torque.  I'd also be weary of going out of state.  The police near Moab were ticketing a bunch of out of state and local trucks.  I've heard of this being done in a few other places as well.  You're breaking state as well as federal laws.

If you want bolt-on there are two choices Random Technology and Magna Flow/Carsound.  RT charges an arm and a leg though.  Magnaflow charges $100 for 49-state and $200 for their 50-state.  I've had two Magnaflows.  One 49-State and one 50-state.  Jeep passed CA emissions tests with either. Go figure.

If you want a cheap replacement that's not bolt-on then there are more choices.  I think Magnaflow sells some as well as some lesser named companies.  They're around $50 but require welding.  Look for a stainless steel high-flow cat and not a OE generic as those are huge.

won't hurt anything but tail pipe emissions.

may cost you a ticket if random checks
