Title: Header/ Cat question
Post by: grumpygy on August 23, 2011, 06:04:16 PM
Ok Got lucky and got a Pacesetter header for my 94 YJ.  the cross over pipe has the 4 bolt flange that would work with a 92 Cat.  Now the Question is will a 92 Cat fit in that area.  It would be nice to have it bolt up that way and I could finally put a Cat back on the jeep so I will be legal once again.

This would also make putting the header on real easy.

Also read on another post that someone was using the Band type of Clamp.  Has anybody else used them and how well did they work  I like the Idea of being able to pull it apart with out cutting.

i cut that flange off and the cat i got (was a universal 2.25/2.25) was 2.25ID so i just slided it onto the pacesetter pipe. if that's a 2.25OD then you'd need an adapter. Stainless band clamp dual bolt worked great, positioned it about 1/2 way and tighten the bolts. they go for about $15 or so shipped on ebay or about $25 at the parts store. I will never use the regular exhaust clamps there again, my stock pipe got mangled and i kept cutting it every time i replaced the cat (I used the generic ones and they get broken inside - probably offroading is speeding up the process).

So what's the problem?  1987-1995 all use the same exhaust from the cat all the way back.

I think he's asking what to do with the flange at the end of the downpipe. When i looked to replace my cat a direct fit was $170 and a generic was $60.

$97 vs. 57 isn't that much of a difference.

The $40 difference would cover the hassle of getting the universal to work.  The other downside would be the support bracket for the cat.  That bracket absorbs some engine vibrations which still can tear up an exhaust if not hung right.  BTDT.  I also like the band clamps better then the old saddle/U-clamps but they tend to cost more.

he's talking about the square 4 bolt flange at the end of the downpipe where it meets the cat - the direct fit you posted is the same as generic slip fit over the downpipe (there is no difference other than a missing length of aluminized pipe worth about $5). An OEM cat was very expensive when i wanted to buy it and didn't have the time to shop online, you can probably get it at a better price than what i posted but i still think it's over $100

the support bracket for the cat was welded on the downpipe on my Jeep ('95 YJ), i cut it off and used it at the end of the cat - i don't think they came with the cat and I know for sure the pacesetter does not have it on the downpipe (unless i'm forgetting and it was on the cat pipe but that's what i remember, been a while so i could be wrong).

those band type clamps do cost more but you can reuse them as long as you don't go crazy happy with the impact wrench (leave some for next time, they stretch but there's no need to go all the way, it will seal the 2 pipes by compression and if there is anything leaking (unlikely) will fill with carbon in no time. They aren't that much more expensive in the end since you can reuse them and also if you compare them to a regular one that is stainless the price tag is not that much more (the regular plated clamps would rust to hell and end up looking like crap after a winter or some wheeling trips given the temps on the exhaust, the all stainless band looks like new still).

The cat support bracket bolts to the cat at 3 of those 4 bolt holes.

i'll take a picture of the one i have, was welded at the end of the downpipe - probably different years had different setup. I didn't have the flange either, was slip fit but i don't know that's how it was originally or modded by the p/o.

Since mine is a 94 it would have a different support bracket anyway.  But that is something I need to look at on mine.  But if its attatched to the cat I will not see it since mines now gone.

Decided I'm going to try the flanged cat it was just a little over $100.  Also went with a Dynomax cat back system cause I'm cheap.  System cost $141.95 and they have a $75 rebate for any cat back system that is going on till the end of the month.

  Also ordered the band clamps.

May not be stainless, but neither is my old one and its been on there about 7 years and still not rusted out.

Mine was like that too(95.5) and the hanger was welded on the down pipe. And am pretty sure came that way.

You may hate yourself after you install it,I have one and dont care for it too much.A few of my buddies love it -say it sounds beefy-but from inside the jeep it is quite annoying.

you should have gone with 2.5'' stainless for the same amount (EDIT: not the same amount, $23 more)
TJ tailpipe mandrel-bent $105 http://www.quadratec.com/products/17603_9001.htm (you're handy, i'm sure you could get it to work in a YJ, i don't know for sure if it fits, i ordered the LJ tailpipe and planning to cut/weld to fit)

Magnaflow muffler 11226 stainless satin finish $60 free shipping http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-5-O-C-4x9-Oval-14-Body-MagnaFlow-Muffler-SS-11226-/150652839175?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item23139be507
for another $20 you can get the polished one 14326

(EDIT - this one that i initially posted is not Magnaflow but Magflow which is a knockoff - Magnaflow Muffler 11226 (satin finish) $30 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Stainless-Steel-Performance-Muffler-2-1-2-Magflow-11226-/260841479176?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cbb5d1c08)

Hmm.  I looked in the '94 FSM and it shows the weld-on bracket but it still uses a flange and not slip-on.

so does the '95 FSM in chapter 11 page 1 figure 1, but if you go to service procedures section (chapter 11 - page 3 and page 4 in this case) it shows the correct downpipe with welded hanger and slip fit + clamp (fig 3 and 5).

what does the 94 showing if you scroll down to that section - i think i had the 94 FSM somewhere but i can't find it anymore so i can't compare

Yup, confusing.

3 & 5 show the slip-on but 1 shows a flange.

yeah, i found the '94 fsm and it's the same as '95 - i guess they didn't update the general exhhaust system image from previous versions

fig 3 is XJ actually, fig 5 is YJ but they are similar.

speaking of which, anyone still has the cat heatshield on the YJ - mine is long gone and i want to make one out of 16 gauge stainless - if you have it and you can take a picture and post it would be much appreciated. My passenger side floorboard gets really hot on long trips in the summer (really hot) and want to improve that as it's quite annoying (someone told me )

nope, i thought it was $141 after rebate - what part number is your kit?

EDIT: i've seen them at about $200 to $210 for the 2.25 aluminized steel, so i figured with shipping and take off the $75 the $140 was about right.

$67 is almost free so now i get it.

i was just curios, same p/n is $209 at quadratec so you got a heck of a deal from Summit, basically same price as a generic muffler for a nice dynomax kit. I don't qualify as it's USA only rebate and i did order my parts already anyway (i was after a performance setup 2.5'' diameter also).
