The other day I opened the radiator and the cap had brown crap piled on it and it was low on coolant after cleaning the cap and overflow I filled it with coolant. There was also a small hole in the hose that goes from heater core to thermostat housing I replaced that with a slightly narrower hose and now the temp gauge is running from 210 to 260 it happens at high and low speeds. I back flushed the system and replaced the thermostat along with the radiator cap. I was thinking it could be a bad sensor or the water pump but I don't know how to check them without pulling everything apart. what do you guys think it could be.

did you replace the radiator cap or just cleaning it? was the brown stuff hard deposits or more like grease? if the latter how's your oil looking, any foaming on the oil fill cap?

I replaced the cap the brown stuff was like grease, and i pulled the water pump today and it looks like new.

if it was grease like would point towards the cyl head gasket, check the oil.

So the temp was fine until you changed out the hose? The 'grease' is probably from being low on coolant allowing water vapor to condense under the cap since that's the highest point.
What you might want to do is pull the temp. sender and test it to see if it's accurate. Then check the gauge.
Did you replace the thermostat before or after this started happening? Was the old thermostat working? Did you test the new one? If you bought a cheap one, then it could be bad as well.

Also was it the right temp. Will fully agree on the cheap one had that happen to me before.

Sure you got the right thermostat. Mine stays at 180 all day long never over.
Also when it cools off pull the cap and fire it up, see what it does, do you notice movement in the fluid(only Movement after the Thermostat opens). Do you notice Bubbles. At round 180-190 did you see the motion of the fluid pick up.
Just checked you could get a 195,180 or a 160 thermostat. I use the 180 cause here in the winter 180 works the best.

Agree . I use the 180 cause in the winter if I use a 195 it never reaches that. At least at 180 it stays at a steady 180.

Cheap one being a Stant or anything other then a Robertshaw/MrGasket $10 thermostat.
You can put the thermostat in a pot and boil the water. When the temp reaches the designated temp it should open. You can also run the engine and take the temp with the radiator cap off and watch for the thermostat to open. It's easy to tell since the radiator will start to overflow as the temps rise then it should drop quickly when the thermostat opens.
Also, you said you replaced the water pump. Did did you get a reverse flow or a standard?

I have the 195 in there now, and no i did not see any movement in the radiator I though it could be the water pump so i pulled the water pump off but it look like new to me. I never replaced the water pump just pulled it off all i replaced was the thermostat.

Which way did the spring face. Into the Block or into the housing.

did you put the side with the spring towards the cylinder head (away from the hose side)?

Is the pump a reverse flow?

Just one more question. What color is the coolant you are using now and what was the color before.

the spring is facing to the block it only fit in one way, the pump should be regular flow I think it is the original and it was working fine before, finally the coolant now is green and the coolant that came out was brown but was originally green.

Did you by chance reverse the hoses connection if you changed both?

have someone in the car watching the gauge while you keep your hand on the upper hose, when the thermostat opens it will get pretty warm quick so give a signal and the other person read the gauge - your goal here is to see if your gauge shows 260 when the thermostat opens, if that's the case then it's either the thermostat or the gauge/sender. A more unconventional way is to leave the cap out (when the coolant is cold, don't take it off when hot - i'm sure you know but i just mentioned it to be safe) - if it starts boiling before the thermostat opens then that's the problem, if not then it's your gauge or sender.

I only changed one hose and I should put my hand on the upper radiator hose right.

It will start to overflow a little before the thermostat opens. So you'll want to catch the overflow and add some once the thermostat opens.
I'm still wondering if he got the right water pump though.

the water pump I took off was the original so unless the factory put the wrong one on it is fine and I just ordered a new pump i figured i would replace it while it is off since it has over 100k on it so i cant do anything until it comes in. another question though do you have to put any sealer on the inlet pipe or do you just screw it in.

What about air in the system? In my Honda if there is air in the system it idles funny and does weird things.

Might want to try and put the same size hose back on it
