Title: Exhaust spits after ever gear, what will fix this?
Post by: jwrape on March 15, 2006, 02:23:19 PM
Hey guys. Everytime I run the RPM's up above 3k rpms the exhaust spits as soon as I push the gas for the next gear. For instancve i will shift from 1st to 2nd and as I let off the clutch and give it gas again to accelerate in 2nd it makes a spit sound from the exhaust.

I am running rich but I don't know if that is what is making it do that.

I don't know what to do to get it to run leaner. I have replaced the O2 sensor and moved the AIS forward to the air intake tube to fool the computer and that helped a little but it still runs too rich.

Spits?  So you're backfiring through the exhaust?  I'd suspect that you are running rich and it's getting into the exhaust where it ignites.

Yea, it spits like a small back fire. Not really loud. Almost sounds like if you held your breathe for a few minutes and then let it out really fast. Kinda like a big PUFF of air.
What can i do to resolve it. It's almost embarrassing.

Jeep runs good otherwise except the running rich and the spitting.

I was thinking about advancing the distributor to see if that helps.
