For those that don't know the locals like to dig them the day of the race so drivers hit them unexpectedly.  This is done for two reason.  One is to get more exciting pictures.  The other is to get a free souvenir.

They can be pretty nasty too from what I understand. Big holes or trenches that were not there in pre-run can ruin the race for you. Not to mention running over someone.
