Title: Engine almost ready to go in... but

The old pilot bearing was too big.  Have another one coming today but scared I am going to break it.  What is the best way to insert it.  I read to use the back of a 7/8 socket and tap it in with a hammer. Sound like it would work or break the bearing? Also do I grease inside the bearing or the shaft coming out of the tranny for easier install of engine?

You're tapping it in not beating on it.  It won't break.  The bearing is supposed to be dry.

You're tapping it in not beating on it.  It won't break.  The bearing is supposed to be dry.

i don't think it's dry, i just got a new one and it has some sort of Lithium grease from factory (when it comes with the outer shell on it, for the 4.0L that is)

Those are still oilless bushings.  That grease is there just to help assembly that's all.

that's a needle bearing, the bushing is made out of oilite bronze or graphite bronze and you don't use grease on it

i always used grease on pilot bearings but i just checked the FSM to make sure i'm not mistaking

PILOT BEARING REPLACEMENT
(1) Remove transmission. Refer to Group 21 for
procedure.
(2) Remove clutch cover and disc.
(3) Remove pilot bearing. Use internal (blind hole)
puller such those as supplied in Snap On Tool Set

(4) Lubricate new bearing with Mopar high temperature
bearing grease.

(5) Start new bearing into crankshaft by hand.
Then seat bearing with clutch alignment tool (Fig. 7).

Most pilot bushings for Jeeps are bronze though.

Ah, couldn't really tell from the pic.  Most pilot bushings for Jeeps are bronze though.
i didn't know they ever had a bushing but i was wrong, mine had a bearing ('95) and same for the '94 core i bought to play with, however a pilot bushing listed (both actually, either bushing or bearing) up until and including 1995 4cyl but i'm not sure when they made the switch or if it was always one or the other, the 4.2L 6 cyl seems that it had a bearing starting with 1986 year and bushing or bearing before that, the 4.0L only had pilot bearing (no bushing listed for replacement parts).

that is what i got exactly sharp and a perfect fit. now can someone tell me how the hell to torque the bolts down to 40 ft lbs without spinning the damn flywheel.

put a bolt in the left threaded hole in the block and use a screwdriver on the flywheel teeth (the ones for the starter and not the crank sensor ones) and rest it against that bolt - walk in the park afterwards.

Finally got it on, not enough room to insert it, have to take front end off.  getting closer though.
