After 4 months down, my Jeep is back on the road! :weee: Back in October/November I was troubleshooting a knocking noise in my engine on the work bench page. It turned out to be a cracked # 2 piston. I was seriously thinking about selling it, but I could not bear to let it go for peanuts. I then looked at upgrades. I really wanted to do a v8 upgrade or an I6 swap, but it was a lot more then I could afford and there was too many uncertainties. I just could not justify the expense. I ended up pulling the engine, having the block bored out, the head machined and performed a full rebuild. My brother came down (he is a CJDR dealer mechanic in NH) and helped out. I got a little OCD and painted up the external enigne components. The rebuild went relativly smooth with a couple exceptions from mistakes I did during disassembly and cleaning. I have some pics and as soon as I can I will post them or a link to them. Thanks for everyone's help on here with the troubleshooting. I am not sure if this is the right page, but I just wanted to post something!

looking forward to the pics
how's it running now with the fresh rebuild?

She runs good. It feels like it might have a little more torque on the hills (that could be my imagination). I still have to downshift on some of them. It is still breaking in so time will tell. The gas milage on the 1st tank of gas sucked big time. i think it was about 13-14 mpg. I think (hope) it will get better as she gets broken in. I was averaging around 19 before all this. I still need to do a couple things to it. I had an oil pan (off of a yj engine) engine all cleaned up and painted ready to go, to find out, it won't fit on the tj block with the tj oil pickup. I plan on pulling the pan off when I do the first oil change (probably next weekend) and cleaning it up and painting it. I bought a skid plate for the engine that I will install then also. I am still working on the pics.

Ok lets see if this works. This link should take you to the set of pics on my flicker page. there are 30 photos there. I do not think I would be able to load them all. Let me know if this does not work.

I was able to view but it was a small pain to get in.
For some reason they also said the photo's were not safe, Like in a porn warning. Not sure what that was about cause all I seen of a person was a hand. :slapfight:

I guess it was 4 clylinder jeep porn! :smokes: I will look into it.

Ok I went in and set the safety setting on those photos to safe, so you should no longer get the warnings for those photos. Maybe I will try to also post in the readers rides section.

No problems with the pics here.

I dont like how that engine looks. It's just TOO clean. You need to get some mud and dirt in there, so I suggest you take it wheeling! Nice job, man! I've been wanting to do that to mine for a while, but just have not found a chance!
-
That's bad ass! I love the color. Hope that gas mileage comes back.
Did you have any work done to the head before you put it back on?
-
Good job man!

Thanks for the compliments.
The head was cleaned magnafluxed and the mating surfaces machined, and the valve guides were redone I did not have the ports polished. The machine shop I used said it really would not do anything for the rebuild I did. The shop does a lot of local drag cars so they were pretty knowledgeable. They probably thought I was crazy to even rebuild it. The gas milage is making it way back up now. Hopefully after I change the oil back to synthetic this coming weekend it will be back to normal.

Hopefully I will be able to hook up with a club this spring and maybe i can try out Rouch Creek. Unfortunatly there is nothing close in the people's communist republic of MD.

Dont change to synthetic till you have done a lot of miles,
I did on my 2.5 rebuild at 2000 miles and it blew the ring seating.. Compression
dropped to 135 ,,
Drained and ran dino for 3 oil changes and got my compression back. (165+)
The 2.5 has a surprisingly hard block. Takes a while to break in the cylinders.
My builder commented on it as well , we bored it 50 and he said he had to
rotate the tool head several times. Said it was like doing a high nickel chevy block...

Thanks for the advise. I guess I will hold off a bit on that. I just filled up again yesterday, (I average 2 - 3 tanks a week!) and the mpg was up to 18.2. So there is some hope it will get even better.

Dayum... 18 is not bad! Id hit that right about now.
Interesting the mech said port/polish wouldn't help your engine.
Seeing more power than you remember?

Had my head done recently and my local Machinest who does this work also said it was not worth it to port and polish the head may even lose some low end grunt. Which we really need. He has almost stoped doing it and he had a flow bench in his place. So he would know.
But he had some Ideas for when I do the block. To include the cam. Said he had a guy in Washington State who could regrind it.
-
a good port and polish would take you about $500, so my thinking is they can't charge you that or feel you don't get much for that money, but saying it won't help is absolute bs

that's probably Delta Cam, about $60 for a regrind (or something like that, pretty reasonable). only problem is that they keep the stock overlap or they can't change it by much - give them a call, nice guys to deal with and they take the time to explain options. the other issue is that I think you need to get custom length pushrods with a regrind to get the preload back to stock.

The jeep feels stronger each day. She even goes up the hills better. I do not have to downshift (as much). I changed to the soft top last night. The nice weather on the east coast has given me spring fever.

My guy told me the same thing that grumpygy's machinist said: The cost/benefit ratio was not worth what little gain may be made. Now my hemi in my charger, that is a totaly different story. Hopefully it wil be a number of years before I have to do that.
