Title: How do you take the shifter rod off?

Just removed the AX-5 trans from the 4 banger....lost 5th gear and the others thump a little.  I removed the shifter by taking the 4 bolts from the top of the tranny off.  I want to know, is there a way to remove just the shifter lever without removing the top cover to the tranny?  It is on a square stud.  Any ideas?

I believe it's push down and turn CCW.

Yup! You push down on the ring at the bottom of the shifter and turn it CCW. Mine was nice and slick with oil and other things so I used a machinists scribe to grip it enough to turn it.
