Title: Seen a weird leaf setup today
Post by: BoringDave on April 01, 2012, 08:33:45 PM
So I was headed to the local dollar tree today and there was an old lifted land cruiser parked in the lot. So like evey motor head I had to stop and look. I found it had no shackles? They welded flat plates that hung down off the frame. They cut the eyes off the main leafs and rolled that edge down and the plates would just set on top. They also installed what looks to be a track bar to keep everything centered.

What it looks like to me is when it would go into a droop situation, the spring would just fall away from the frame. Then the only thing stoping it was a huge shock. They looked like 20" travel shocks and were mounted with maybe an inch or so up travel..

Anyone ever see anything like this before? I've been googling and can't find anything like it.

Dave

Picture would have been sweet; sounds like a crazy setup - and not a good crazy.

I know! I should have taken a picture, It was crazy looking. It's a small town and I think he may work for the Napa in the same complex.

I forgot to mention about the funky leafs also. It looked as they some how drilled or punched new holes for the center pins in the main leaves. All the other attaching leaves we're mounted off center of the main leaf. So the front were mounted more forward of center, and the rear were mounted more aft of center. This made the wheel base much longer, by mabe 8 to 12 inches.

Sounds like it's basically a 1/4" elliptical except they kept the other half so they wouldn't have to add a coil-over.  Having the axle and leaf drop away with just gravity looks cool on an RTI ramp but really isn't that helpful offroad.

Mounting the axle off-center isn't a big deal and is fairly common.  XJ and SJ leafs come like that.

Sounds pretty strange. But it is possible to use a slider instead of a rotating shackle, but the slider usually controls side to side movement too.
