Ok I put the engine (new 1992 from a grand cherokee) into my 90. I tried taking my 1988 cherokee bracket and alt and put on the 92. It seems they are too small. Is the bracket different and the alt smaller on the 88 as compared to the 92.

isn't the 88 a v-belt and the 92 a serpentine?

am I remembering correctly and we are talking about your jeep that you put the 88 4.0L in which died and now you are saying you put a 1992 4.0l in? if so the alternator from the 88 is different than the 92. when they changed form renix to Chrysler injection they went from the delco type alternators to the other kind that are more computer controlled. the 4.0l with renix had serpentine belts like the new jeep but different alternator (so im assuming the bracket is different although I can't confirm that).

from what i remember the GC has a different pulley offset compared to Wrangler, not sure if and where the Cherokee fits in (if it's same as GC or Wrangler so if the latter then the alternator won't work even from a newer one). What i mean by pulley offset is the relative distance of the first rib on the belt to a point on the engine block (like the mounting face of the water pump).

Ya the bracket seems too small, time to hit the junk yards
