Title: Opened up the exhaust and the catalic con is empty. Now what?
Post by: andpgud on August 10, 2012, 12:04:09 PM
I opened up the exhaust because the Jeep seems to have no power. Read the codes but no faults so the exhaust has to be the problem.
What turned out was that there was nothing left of the catalic coverter inside so it is just like a straight exhaust. My car has 2 lamda sensors so would you say that this was the problem after all?
What should I do now?

it might be that all the insides of your cat are packed nicely in your muffler, that can cause loss of power. Your gutted cat won't cause the loss of power unless you have loose stuff inside that can block the outlet when the engine is running.

Not sure what you're problems were but the second O2 sensor monitors the catalytic convertor.  If it's empty it's probably throwing a code.  The innards of the cat are probably in your muffler or if you're lucky, out on the road.

I checked the muffler and it was rather empty. The jeep shows no codes after turning the key three times. Just shows me donE

Really? That seems reasonable to me. I remember paying over $200 for a new one years ago on my S-10.

Depends on what state you're in as well.  50-state legal stuff is $$$.  I think most non-stainless are $50-75 for a universal.  Stainless steel, universal $75-100.  Bolt-on Stainless steel $100-300.

i didn't think of that, here if it passes emissions test it doesn't matter.

Ok. This is where I stand.
The catalyc converter is empty. Dont know where the insides are .
My mechanic took of the rear muffler and shook it. Then said there is nothing in it by shaking it. Is there a change that the parts can be in there?
The put it all together and nothing changed.
The car was read and I also did the code test and nothing. I am not gettin a check engine light.
A friend of mine tells me to get a silenser where the cat is and put a emulator on the second lamda. Here where I live I dont have to have catalic converter.
What would be the best way for me to tackle this?

Go to stock by fixing the problem at the source - get the replacement/performance/universal cat. Mechanics, future owners, or you will have less headaches that way. My 2 cents.

Is this jeep new to you.

I have owned it for 6 years, but only drive it over the summer and untill now on I have only had to change oil, fluids.
I live in another country and use the car only when I am in Poland.

i would at least replace the muffler, uknown if that's the reason but just to make sure, the insides of the cat had to go somewhere so for that matter i would replace both.

This would be my recommendation as well.

I will then get an universal cat along with a new muffler.

What are the specs that the catalyc converter has to have?

Reason I ask is the old owner could have gutted the cat.

Plugged fuel filter,, engine goes lean and the cat melts...
And blows out the tail pipe in itty bitty pieces..

My YJ did it twice...
