need a rebuilt tranny 1995 2.5L - where most reputable place to get.
can anyone help? I am not planning on doing my own rebuild or paying someone to rebuild, it seem easier to buy and have delivered on internet. anyone have recommendations.
-
my recommendation is to ditch the AX5 and get a junkyard NV3550, it's just not worth rebuilding - too weak for offroading and bigger tires.
-
i am not discounting your opinion, but the cost for those is MUCH higher. MUCH in my area. non standard clutch, new bellhousing, new input gear on xfer case. I do not have the funds for that operation. and the transmission itself is 3x the money.
i am taking this jeep back to 31s. it is a road/DD - it does not go offroading other than getting thru snow drifts in winter.
-
I'd get a Salvage AX-5 then.
-
a reman is somewhere between $600 to $1000 depending on what was replaced in it and probably what you want to be new and fresh inside the transmission (in my opinion you should at least have all bearings and synchros replaced (and of course the 2 seals). Having a shop do the reman for you would possibly cost more or about the same as buying an already reman transmission but the only thing is you don't know what's been replaced in it, there is a chance that most parts were inspected and only the synchros were replaced (and even then maybe not all).
the reason i mentioned the upgrade is that in the end it will probably cost you about the same and have an upgraded transmission - lots of places would let you swap your t-case with a proper input one if you buy the transmission from them, there is no shortage of NP231 with 23 input splines.
the clutch can be had new for $100 (Luk) but you can only use the disc out of it, a bit of waste of money but it's not that extreme. A reman Camaro clutch disc is somewhere around $50 probably, nothing else involved in the clutch replacement other than swapping the disc with the Camaro one. transmission mount can be reused from the AX5 but you need to elongate the mounting bolts.
fairly straight forward and popular swap
anyway, just my opinion, indeed the AX5 would be the easiest way to go since there's no custom work at all.

looking into it, gotta do some more checking.
the cost of shipping will basically equal out the nv3550 (which i found local for 1k) and the rebuilt ax5 850 + ship.
-
i would negotiate the NV3550, costs are somewhere between $500 and $800 depending on miles, i understand if they're scarce where you're at but it's worth a shot. couple of things i forgot to mention that you also need
- an advance adapters pilot bearing (bushing)
- if the short shifter lever in the shift tower has a bent in it (kind of an S curve) you'll have to take that lever out and rotate it 180 deg (otherwise it's too far back), pretty easy to do with a snap ring pliers if i remember correctly - might not be needed if you don't have a center console but it fits really well that way.
-
here's the Advance Adapters pilot bushing needed

the rest of the parts
Dodge Dakota 2.5L/4cyl 96-98 Transmission Bellhousing
Chevy Camaro 84 4cyl/4sp Clutch Disc
NP231 23 spline input shaft (or the t-case with the proper input shaft)
-
I would stay away from a rebuilt AX-5. Unless they really know what they're doing, most rebuilds don't last very long and with shipping, you wouldn't want to be shipping a trans back and forth.

At the very bottom of this page they have brand new (NOS) AX5's. But pricey $1700.00 They also have re-man for about $1K
-
so there is no issues with the shaft length from the crank to transmission? that works out perfectly?
-
[if the question was for me]
the pilot bushing sticks out about 1/2'' more compared to the stock pilot bearing/bushing just about as much as the bellhousing is deeper, so no, no issues with the input shaft.
-
Not trying to hijack this topic (but....)
I rebuilt my AX5 about a year ago. An experienced mechanic was present and did most of the work (to be honest).
We drive the car mostly in trials and offroad and this spring the rebuilt AX5 locked driving on the highway and probably got damaged badly. Not sure what happened, not yet opened the case to inspect it.
Instead I just put in a used AX5 (from a XJ). Now this AX5 is also making some noise so I guess this one needs new bearings.
Instead of rebuilding the 2 AX5's, I am VERY interested in swapping the AX5 for the NV3550.
I have the following question:
The parts mentioned below with the exception of the NV3550 are hard to find for me in The Netherlands.
Is any of you willing to buy and ship them to me?
(esp the bellhousing and clutch disc)
Ofcourse I am willing to compensate you for time and trouble.
Please respond by sending me a message.

so far, my biggest hangup is finding a bellhousing. car-part.com does not list one available, which is very weird.

Darn, when i got mine there were plenty - found one only with no price listed.

just buy the clutch disc online or order it at a local parts store in Ned, you can get Luk, Exedy or Rhino p/n 04-052 for under $100, this guy has it for $73 + shipping http://www.ebay.com/itm/LUK-04-052-Clutch-Set-/200792581941?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec02ba735&vxp=mtr#shId
AA pilot bushing it's fairly light and easy to ship
only issue is the bellhousing, scarce so you'll probably need to spend some time on the phone and figure it out, can't see why they wouldn't ship to Netherlands if you pay for shipping, would get more expensive to ship it twice.

Might be worth it to see what Marlin Crawler can do. They specialize in Aisin transmissions and their HD is going to be cheaper, IIRC.

i checked rockauto and seems that they're the same till 2001 (based on engine and transmission, only thing that could be different is the crank sensor position but i doubt they changed it although you never know).

It might be better to just buy a used AX5. My AX5 was rebuilt about 6 years ago for about $400 (here in Mexico) and it is working well ( I only put about 1000 a year on the YJ, so even if the rebuild only lasts 20k or 30k miles, this is 20 to 30 years for me). However, I was able to buy a used AX5 from a TJ a few months ago for about $150. This is now my backup, ready to go in if and when needed. So buying good used AX5s seems like it could be a good low-cost alternative.

It is not just the costs; AX5 is ready available here and I was preparing to overhaul my recently broken one and put it ont he shelf as spare.
The problem is that you never break it in your garage but somewhere in the field, in the mud or on the rocks having fun. The aggravation is much more than the spent.
The invitation to help me find and ship the parts stands....

got the bellhousing from GA. they have sold 5 in the last 2 months. only place that has them. next step is to barter with my local guy to get that nv3550 cheaper............... is 1000 too high? 95000 miles

at least negotiate swapping your t-case with matching one for the transmission in that price. $1000 is high but you don't have many options from what you're saying.
-
the JY that has the transmission nv3550 does not have a YJ 231-23spline tcase. the nearest one is like 150 miles. he has nothing to swap me. i think im gonna have to get the input gear for 191 bucks from AA
found nv3550 80 miles away, easy drive, for 750. 69k miles.
-
the nv3550 would have had a t-case attached to it, might want to double check with the guy you found the transmission for $750, or it might be that is already attached to it :)
