Title: custom steel bar for 2000 lb hitch
Post by: bestos on August 27, 2012, 08:42:11 AM
hello everyone,

I have an OLD 1-5/8" frame mounted hitch on my 1991 wrangler (6cly).  Putnam no longer makes a 1-5/8" ball mount, NO ONE does, so i was thinking of making one.  my basic idea is to get a solid steel bar - 1018 Cold Finished Square Bar - 1-5/8"  (that is the only kind of bar that is sold at that size)

here are the specs:

Brinell = 126, Tensile = 64,000 +/-,  Yield = 54,000 +/-

its cold rolled, so not sure how much weight it can handle being in a hitch,  anyone have any thoughts if i can drill 2 holes in it, one for a ball and one for the shank?

Let's see what the fab experts say but it sounds like it would work fine.

i am going with basically a straight bar, no drop being welded on or nothing, just 2 holes, height is close to where my small trailer would sit.
