People, I have a '98 TJ with a cracked 3RD Brake light lens. The trained monkey at the local Mopar says, 'That will be $191.81' I said WTF? He says 'That will be $191.81. You have to buy the whole unit. You can't get just the lens'. Tried the local junkyards and every TJ was missing the whole brake light pavillion.
Any ideas?
Thanks. Jim

Throw it in the trash? You're only required to have 2 working brake lights.
-
mine went where Jeffy said when i got the bigger tires, i was too lazy to add a riser.
-
Same here, long gone.
-
Try to buy the door contacts, think they cost just as Much. I got pulled over a few times cause the light was not working. So Pulled it and have not been pulled over since.
-
Gotta be a ton of used lights out there, most Jeepers pull them.
-
Check ebay.

I've been pulled over for not having it and in Oregon it is required I found after researching it...
Its in my garage right now though... :)
Cheers

Sounds sketchy at best. DOT supposedly adopted it back in 1986 but not all cars had it till '96/'97. The Jeep Wrangler only started using them in 1994. If that's the only reason he pulled you over, he got lucky.
-
Not complicated, he ran my plate driving behind me then pulled me over,
I'm guessing he was one of the cops who would get you for fender flares being too narrow as well... ???
He did give me a fixit ticket to justify the time I suppose, just had to drive into a police station and show them it was back on... No points no $$>
I suspect my Spintech got his attention when I left the light... LOL

He got lucky in the fact that your Jeep is a '94. I bet 99% of people wouldn't know that Jeeps didn't have them till '94. If your Jeep was a pre-94 he would have still written you a ticket but you could have gotten it thrown out.
These days, even Fit-it tickets cost money.

I chucked mine off my YJ too and my current TJ didn't have one on account of the swing out tire rack.

I think it is required in MI as well. Something in the code about 2 lights required, but third as well if it originally came with vehicle.

Never been pulled over for not having mine in Oregon.

apparently not needed
in the state of oregon:
816.100 Brake lights. Each of the following is a requirement for brake lights as described:
(1) Brake lights shall be placed on the rear of the vehicle. Where more than one brake light is required under ORS 816.320 and 816.330 at least one brake light shall be placed on each side of the rear.
(2) Brake lights shall be constructed and located on a vehicle so as to give a signal of intention to stop.
(3) Brake lights shall emit a red light. If the motor vehicle was manufactured before 1959 and the brake light is combined with the taillight in a taillight assembly, the assembly may contain an insert as described under ORS 816.080.
(4) Except as provided in subsection (11) of this section, brake lights shall emit a steady burning light.
(5) Brake lights shall emit a light that is plainly visible and capable of being seen and distinguished from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of the vehicle in normal daylight.
(6) Brake lights required under ORS 816.320 and 816.330 shall be mounted, so far as practicable, in such a manner as to reduce the hazard of being obscured by mud or dust thrown by the wheels.
(7) Brake lights shall not project a glaring or dazzling light.
( 8 ) Brake lights may be incorporated with a taillight.
(9) Brake lights shall be activated upon application of the service brake.
(10) Brake lights required under ORS 816.320 and 816.330 or any parts for brake lights must comply with standards adopted by the Department of Transportation under ORS 816.010.
(11) Brake lights for motorcycles may flash intermittently, provided that the brake lights do not override the rear turn signal function. [1983 c.338 §458 (7); 1985 c.16 §240 (7); 1985 c.69 §1 (7); 1985 c.71 §4 (7); 1985 c.393 §13 (7); 1985 c.420 §6 (7); 1997 c.492 §2; 2003 c.158 §24]

Its considered federal safety equipment. Much like the cat converter its only mandatory where testing is done, but anywhere on a public highway if a cop happens to somehow figure out you don't have one they can write you up... We all takes our chances. 8)
I have had a lifetime of bad luck on the weird crap, I once got written up for non DOT seat belts in a car that didn't come with seat belts! I put Simpson belts in a 65 Baja Bug... I got a ticket for transporting alcohol within reach of the driver I had a case of beer bungeed on the luggage rack of my MGB,,,, I've gotten a speeding ticket on a bicycle 50 in a 35.. (Ok I deserved that one... :roflol: ) I got a ticket for missing wipers, while driving a jeep with the windshield taken off.. One fo rdriving too slow on a highway,, The bicycle ticket was the only one that cost me money... ???
At one time I had a easter basket full of fixits and non moving violation citations, most collected in my late teens when I owned a screaming 60 hp Datsun 1200 cc pickup.. Painted Chrysler Corona Taxi Yellow... Would just barely hold 70 on the freeway if I had a hill to get up to speed.
Cheers...

it is FMVSS, standard 108, but apparently it is directed at manufacturers
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a legislative mandate under Title 49 of the United States Code, Chapter 301, Motor Vehicle Safety, to issue Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Regulations to which manufacturers of motor vehicle and equipment items must conform and certify compliance. FMVSS 209 was the first standard to become effective on March 1, 1967. A number of FMVSS became effective for vehicles manufactured on and after January 1, 1968. Subsequently, other FMVSS have been issued. New standards and amendments to existing standards are published in the Federal Register.
These Federal safety standards are regulations written in terms of minimum safety performance requirements for motor vehicles or items of motor vehicle equipment. These requirements are specified in such a manner "that the public is protected against unreasonable risk of crashes occurring as a result of the design, construction, or performance of motor vehicles and is also protected against unreasonable risk of death or injury in the event crashes do occur."
it is however a DOT compliance requirement for trucks manufactured after '94 or cars after '86 so i'm not sure how that works (if a cop can write you a ticket for removing the 3rd brake light assembly on the Jeep, you could get pulled over if you have it and it doesn't work)

I doubt any cop would pull you over just for a non-working Centre High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL). You only need two working stop lights to be legal. It's one of those more obscure laws that rarely gets written up. You're more likely going to get pulled over for having a, or in this case two rear tail lights out then for a missing CHMSL.
I think the cop was just being nice by not writing it up for all the other stuff he could have. Though he got lucky on the Jeep being a '94. I doubt he knew that trucks had a different cut-off date.

I was pulled over for none working 3rd brake light that was why I pulled it off.

Kind of like driving a Semi truck most have way more lights than technically required, but if you pull through a scale with one out they will write you a ticket... (Delivered heavy equipment for a couple years... ) And that's all DOT not the regular laws so you can get jacked for the most unlikely crap..
I push the odds, I have had to on occasion drive as part of my job, I have put over 200K on 5 vehicles and lord knows how many more on the ones that got bought and sold on a whim... Or the company cars...
Cheers

I guess I should either get my 3rd light working again or yank it off. I have benn luck so far.

Well most LEO's will only care that you have at least 2 rear brake lights. Doesn't matter which two. Still if you don't have it on there at all, you'll be less likely to be on the radar of those who ticket broken 3rd lights.
