This is pretty cool. I don't do a lot of large holes with my drill press but having it be able to slow the RPM's down would be awesome!
-
That is cool. I've ruined a lot of drill bits due to the speed.
-
I just put a vfd on mine - one size fits all and you get infinite adjustability ;)
-
a vfd is def cool - don't you need a 3 phase motor for those though?

Mine is a three phase, but there are VFD's for single phase motors as well.
Here is one:

This is the one I run:

i was looking at a vfd for my lathe, didn't know there were single phase available although they are pricey ('bout double compared to 3 phase from that link you posted) but it saves you from getting a motor.

There are probabally cheaper ones available - just happened to be the first one that popped up in a search.

It seems the 4:1 and 2:1 kits would slow it down and increase the torque. Does the VFD decrease the torque along with the speed? If it does, could this be a problem in some cases?
-
i think the torque is constant with a 3 phase vfd (dunno about the 2 phase). It varies the frequency and the voltage remains the same.
-
Constant instead of increasing. So it doesn't decrease but would still be less than with a gearing (or pulleys) setup. Don't know if it would ever cause a problem...not enough torque for some application.
-
I know I can stop mine with my hand if I feel like it, but torque isn't really something you should need in a bench drill. Mine is a bit odd, as it is an old high speed 40's press out of a war factory with 2 speeds in the pulleys, a 2 speed gearbox and a 2 speed motor (the 2 speeds on the motor are disabled by the VFD). I can get the thing down to around 100RPM
8 Speed Avey Drill Press, size number 1/2 Heavy made by Avey Drilling Machine Corp. of Cincinnati Ohio. The unit has a set of high and low speed selector push buttons and a high / low speed lever providing 8 speeds are (4500/1200, 600/1600, 9000/2400, 12000/3200 rpm). The machine is 73" tall by 21" wide by 36" deep.
Unit has a brass plate on back that reads "Defense Plant Corp. an Instructmentality of the United Sates Government."

From the 40s! Pretty interesting machine.
