Title: jeep wave
Post by: lanulos89 on March 23, 2006, 05:01:54 PM
is it just me or is the tradition of waving to other jeeps dying.  Im driving along see a jeep and wave, and just get dirty looks.  When i first got the jep i only waved to built up jeeps, now i just wave to any jeep and still barly get no responses, xcept for the people i kno and go wheeling with.  Maybe is just that in NY we are getting a new generation of jeep owners. i dont know but we gotta save this tradition...

The Wave
The Definitive Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warning:
Owning, registering, insuring, or driving a Jeep implies knowledge of and intent to abide by the following rules, regulations, and guidelines. Failure to obey the letter or spirit of the rules may result in your being ignored by other Jeep owners as you sit along the side of the road next to your stalled vehicle in a blizzard surrounded by Saturns, Yugos, and Hyundais.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definition:
The Jeep Wave: An honor bestowed upon those drivers with the superior intelligence, taste, class, and discomfort tolerance to own the ultimate vehicle - the Jeep. Generally consists of vigorous side-to-side motion of one or both hands, but may be modified to suit circumstances and locally accepted etiquette. Examples of commonly accepted modifications:
Top off: One handed wave above windshield or outside body tub
Top off during blizzard: Shiver and nod, hands may remain frozen to steering wheel
Southern/rural locations: Raise fingers from steering wheel, nod
It's not what you buy, it's what you build and what you do with it.
In keeping with this cardinal rule of Jeeping, categories have been established to account for each part of the equation.
These categories are:

The Jeep Waving Hierarchy: Based on the vehicle itself. Takes into account the nostalgia factor, the discomfort tolerance quotient, and the amount of owner dedication required to maintain the steed.
The Modifying Sub-categories: Based on what you do with your Jeep.
Equipment Adjustments: What you build.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Rules:
1. All Jeepers are responsible for upholding the tradition of the Wave. Upon contact with a higher scoring Jeep, a Jeeper is required to initiate the Wave, and continue the Wave until:

The Wave is returned
The Wave is blatantly disregarded
The higher scoring vehicle has passed by and is out of sight
2. All Jeepers are required to return the Wave, unless the initiating vehicle is clearly has a negative (below 0) score.

3. All Jeepers are encouraged, but not required, to return the Wave to negative balance vehicles, and take any opportunity presented to guide and mentor them about their responsibilities to their Jeeps in the hopes that they can correct the error of their ways.

4. When unsure of status or wave requirements of a particular encounter or unable to completely assess the other Jeep's score quickly enough to ensure that the proper Jeep Wave Etiquette rules are followed, immediately initiate wave.

"When in doubt, WHIP IT OUT!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, the Jeep Waving Hierarchy (JWH):
Category A Pre-CJ: 30
Category B Pre-AMC CJ: 27
Category C Other CJ: 25
Category D Commando: 20
Category E YJ 16
Category F TJ 15
Category G Cherokee, Wagoneer: 10
Category H All other Jeeps: 5
Category I All other 4WD vehicles EXCEPT yuppie Explorers: 0
Category J All other vehicles 0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Modifying Sub-Categories (MSCs):
(What you do with it)
MSC Guidelines:

1. MSCs must be considered during all Jeep encounters, and wave patterns must be adjusted accordingly.

2. MSC 5 is the median - the accepted norm.

3. MSCs from 1 through 4 will increase score as listed.

4. MSCs 6 and 7 will decrease score as listed.

MSC 1: Top off; vehicle, driver, and all occupants covered with mud: +30
MSC 2: Top partially off; vehicle and some occupants covered with Mud: +20
MSC 3: Top on; vehicle covered with mud: +10
MSC 4: Top off during snow, sleet, hail, or heavy rain: +5
MSC 5: Somewhat dirty: 0
MSC 6: Obviously recently washed, but immediately re-muddied a little: -10
MSC 7: Clean, dry, unscratched, untested: -30

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Equipment Adjustments
(What you build)

Consideration must be given to the current mechanical condition of the vehicle, including all modifications for trailworthiness, comfort, appearance, and spouse-appeasal. These are known as Equipment Adjustments (EAs). EAs are a complicated category, and often difficult to appraise under certain conditions (passing head-to-head at 60 mph, when covered with mud, etc) but must be used to modify score when feasible. If a vehicle is so covered with mud that you are unable to ascertain any of the EAs, you MUST assume that the EAs, when combined with the MSC 1 adjustment, would place the vehicle in a higher scoring position than any non-MSC 1 Jeep, and immediately initiate the wave. Otherwise, EAs will adjust score as follows:

lanulos89 You are right!!  I copy and pasted...  I shoulda made our own personal changes.

I love the Jeep wave...  Here in Washington it happens alot.  Certainly more during the summer than in the winter.  But the truth is, it seems to be a hierarchy thing.   The better your Jeep, the more you expect someone else to wave at you first.  Kinda like them saying "hey, nice Jeep!"

When I had my XJ on the road the only wave i got was from another built Jeep and thats because it was on 35s and cut and dent to the point there was no way you coould say I didn't use it the way it should be used, Now that I have the YJ its hard to remember  to wave.

I dont get the return wave from most TJs especially stock.  Seems that the yuppie driving it is still saving up for the H3. The further I get from chicago the better the waves are recieved. Therefor the ratio of yuppies decreases. Nuff said!!!

If they dont wave back at me i give them the finger it kinda pisses me off.. It should be  written on the driver side sunviser .  In 4 inch letters "you are now part of a long heritage if you see a jeep, wave"

Here in Atlanta GA all Wrangler owners, Cj, YJ, and TJ's all wave at each other. VERY few(mostly women) don't wave. Although I have tried to wave, the XJ and KJ's don't wave at us Wranglers. They seem to have a chip on their shoulders.

Women don't usually wave because they think you're hitting on them rather then doing the wave thing.

I'll only wave to an XJ or KJ if it looks like it's been offroad.  In which case they'll wave.  You'll get the most waves from CJ'ers, YJ'ers and TJ'ers.  Although, it doesn't mean all will wave. Out here there are a lot of FJ's and Toy's that might wave also.  I live in Pirate Country.

I have yet to see a KJ wave.  I doubt that I'll ever see a Commander wave. Same goes for the current generation of Grands.

One thing about the wave.  When you build your Jeep up to a certain point it isn't very street worthy so both hands need to be used while driving.  I get people waving when I'm shifting for some reason.

Here in SW Michigan I get waves from other CJ's, YJ's, and about 2/3's of the TJ's (the other 1/3 are females... a lot of which are young teenagers that haven't properly been briefed in jeep tradition, they just think jeeps are cute  )
These above jeeps (except where noted) usually INITATE the wave, and I promptly return it.  Jeeps I NEVER get waves from are XJ's (Except my wheelin' friends), KJ's, and the stupid Grand's. Over here, it looks like every Grand is owned by a bitchy old lady, thus no wave.
Rubicons are a rare breed over here so far.  My best wheelin' buddy has one, so he waves at me.  But I only see one or two other Rubicons in my town EVER.  A red one and another silver one. The red one looks like it is a yuppy jeep (VERY clean, no dents/scratches, paint still GLISTENS  ), he looks at me like I'm crazy and I think I actually know him or something.  The silver one must be used to it now, cuz after about 10 or so times of waving at him, he waves back now, sometimes even before I get him 8) !  There is a Tomb Raider Rubicon runnin' around some where over here too.  My buddy knows him, but I haven't got to meet him and drool on his jeep yet... if it has a pic of Laura Croft on it anywhere    naughty, naughty thoughts...

I colorado a lot of guys used the one finger salute inset of the wave. If the person was one one of the local message boards you would hear about it. I am a fan of the one finger salute. In PA have never had the one finger salute returned though I am usally in a non jeep unmodified vehicle.

I really guess the Jeep Wave thing has to do with the city or county in which you live.  I suspect that a bigger city, where people see much less of each other, or mostly could care less about anyone else...  You'll see that type of behavior.

Here in Western Washington, most people seem nice.  As I said before, during spring, summer we get much more waves.  When it's cold and dark, windows all closed up and/or fogged up.  Wave or not, you wont see much of it.

I like the wave, it is traditional, or heritage.

I'm in Hartford county and its a mix.  All modified jeeps wave.  All jeeps with men <30 wave.  30-50 60% wave   women <30 40% wave(other 60% think your hitting on them and get all snotty about it.)  30-50, 75% wave(maybe they're happy a 27 yr old dude is paying attention to them)   men and women >50, im not sure they know where they are, but i had an obviously elderly woman initiate a few weeks ago.  Other subcategorys include--cjs, they all wave.  yjs, 85% wave.  tjs 50-50.  Of all my no wave or confused" do I know you?" looks, 95% are in tjs(or lj's)  Usually all stock with bras, tweety or dealership rear tire covers, or even worse...(think blackout headlights, low profile lowered blasting salsa music from 4 15" urban audio subs in a giant bandpass...uuuughhhHHHHHHHHH!!!!!I even saw one with a big spoiler/wing bondo'd onto his hardtop with 13" rims sticking out like 3 ft.   oh, and ANYONE driving a renegade with those plastic ground effects needs a smack on the head if they wave(exception if the said jeep was given to them for free or really cheap, its better than a k car!!)

The one finger salute is not ment to piss anyone off. I guess it is more of a Pirate4x4 thing, and how everyone puts the little finger guys on thier posts. They are just transfering it to the real world. It is like the wave but more "HARD CORE" (sarcasim).

Ouch!!  That one was kinda 'over the top'...

But back on the subject...   My Jeep is big, well street big.  35" tires and decals all over it.  The Jeep is black but the decals are noticable.  Just recently, and only for a month or two, I put on a South American decal from the ARB/Warn AWA4x4 race in Venezuela.  It's huge!  It takes up my back window, and it's yellow with black racing numbers in a white backround.

Talk about looks and waves from all...

So the wave thing does, sometimes, have to do with the size/look/build of your rig.  No disrespect to stock, or mostly stock vehicles out there, but because there are sooo many out there, unless you've got something to look at, or catch someone attention, you'll not get the wave.

This is a long thread...  that hasn't been mentioned before, has it??

The wave was one of the best parts of picking up a new TJ a few years ago. And now with some of the mods I've made on it I'm seeing a lot more waves being returned...I guess there really is something to that scoring system. Although I do have to say that’s way too much math for me to do on the fly without a calculator.

Just got home from a 284 mile cross country trip, Wy - Id, today. Waved at 8 Jeep 4x4s of all types and only one didn't wave back. He had a look on his face like he had been eating rocks. Find I get the best wave returns when I make eye contact, smile, and wave. The wave that made the trip all worth while was the wave I got in return from a fox of a chick in a YJ within the first 20 miles.

Hope her trip went well and safely also.

Livin' here in the mountains, it's sometimes hard to seperate the "country wave" from the "Jeep wave"........one of the things I loved about moving here - everybody waves to each other!!!!  If they're driving a Jeep, I consider it a "Jeep wave"!  But, travelin' around, it's about 50-50...........but I still keep on wavin'.............only way to keep the tradition alive.

I only wave to YJ and CJ drivers.  TJ people might get a wave, if an obvious leaf spring conversion has been done.  Wave from me may also happen if they've done the right thing, showed respect for the senior YJ design and opted to fit a YJ grill on their TJ.

But, even then, with all that, a wave from me is not guaranteed.     kidding

(And, CJ grill on TJ won't fool me)

In Boulder Colorado, wranglers are very common, it seems like every other car on the road is a wrangler and the wave is very "uncool" here.  In the summers when I am in Northern Minnesota and jeeps aren't so common I wave and get waved at.

Ironically here in Yuppyland aka Southern Cali. I get quite a few waves from fellow Jeepers the exceptions seeming to be Girls driving them because they're cute and Hard top equiped Sahara TJs.

After I got my 89YJ most Jeep owners have been waving, I just thought they were impressed with my rig because it was a pretty Jeep and turns a few heads. One evening I went to Autozone for some oil and my alarm remote kept alerting because I have a Viper 5000 with Invisashield which alerts when someone gets to close. When I went outside I had a crowd of motor heads gathered around my Jeep! It was a great feeling after you spend your time and money building up your rig.

My daughter asked me the other day ( after a year of waving ) if you are supposed to wave to the Jeep or the driver (she has been waving to empty jeeps...)

here in cen cal it location, the father u go out in the country the more u waves u get, the funny part is there seems to be more stock YJs than TJs in my area, maybe because of the poor region, if u can buy a new wrangler u can put some money into it :?

So I'm resurrecting this post only to show that not all girls buy wranglers for the "cuteness" or what ever. Hopefully in the next week I'll be getting my TJ. And yes it is close to stock and no I will not being doing a lot of mods on it just yet as I am a poor college student.

I -will- be waving at the Jeeps I see. I know there is a hierarchy to the wrangler thing but if you are going to snub the TJ and newer wranglers of course they won't learn the wave and know to wave back. I love watching out for wranglers on the street and looking for the wave. It puts a smile on my face. I just hope that when I get my TJ that because it is close to stock and I am a girl that I won't be snubbed by older Wranglers.   haha

ive found that grand Cherokees are a waste of time to wave to... same with liberties.... that is unless the drivers hot.  and compass / patriots aren't jeeps.

When I had a CJ you didn't get a wave unless you were a CJ or older model.  Now I wave if it looks like you have ever taken it off road.  The JK with the 6" lift and 24" crome wheels get a  :twofingers: if he waves

my dad has a 4 door... only way we can really live with it is to think of it as being a grandCherokee. as that's what he was going to get but they are too nice to get dirty.... adn that 3.8l v6 in them is definitely a minivan motor.. pretty gutless... id rather have my 4banger and have a reason to be under powered.

Here in the middle of Cow Country (Cen Cal), the Jeep wave is still alive. When I had my 48 Willy's P/UP, I got a lot of waves. Now with my stock 92 YJ I stole from a buddy last week, the waves aren't as often as they were. I guess I gotta spend some money and "buy" the waves again.   :brick:

I think everyone waves in a different language down here, I keep on getting these:  :twofingers:

Haha, no... I try to wave at good (as in dirty) looking YJ's, TJ's, CJ's, and XJ's. Even though I have an XJ, I only wave if they're exceptionally offroad equipped; any yj/tj/cj that looks dirty gets my wave. There's one or two front coil spring YJ's driving around that get a huge smile and a thumbs up any time I see them, and some rear coil XJ's that are always going too fast to wave to, haha.

I feel stupid when I wave though, because my jeep looks retarded for now... it needs new tires and bedlined sides... oh and engine and lots more...

I have to agree with the folks who say it is county/city related.

First, I wave at any cj, yj, tj, and even jk that passes.  If an MJ, XJ, or SJ is appropriately modified, I'll wave at that too.
Here in Jersey, I have experience in 3 counties:
When I lived in Hunterdon, I got 95% wave return from the above vehicles (JK's didn't exist then).
When I lived in Sussex I got 95% return from all but females driving JKs.  There it was about 20%.
Now I live in North/East Somerset on the border of Morris, where I get about 75% return.
For whatever reason, in Long Hill township, and on the road through the great swamp, I get 100% return, even includinjg JKs.

I usually wave at the short wheel base Jeeps and any Jeep vehicle that looks like it is actually used off road.  When I had a '43 GPW the veterans in Douglas, AZ would salute when I drove by, which even more cool than the Jeep wave.

i live in CT and i get the wave. i recently drove pretty far upstate in NY for some relaxin with friends a bit of wheelin and i got the wave pretty much everywhere along the way. I go to school in the bronx and ive never gotten the wave there-city jeeps are just plain rude i suppose :) and ive never gotten a wave from any JK owner-guess the new wave-no pun intended-of jeep owners just doesnt know about the wave tradition.

They should have a sticker on the visor like they do for airbags that tells you to wave dammit.

There are TONS of Jeeps here in Miami, and most of them will not wave.  Some of the built rigs will, though, and I ussually wave back (as long as I see them waving).

Or at least the first major mod  you do should come with instructions!

Chrysler/Jeep used to have a Jeep Wave handbook that they would give to new owners.  I still only wave to Jeeps that look like they've been wheeled or any stock CJ.  There are a few lifted Jeeps around me.  I haven't seen the guy in the silver SOA YJ ever wave though.  The Yellow TJ waves and there is a green TJ that waves as well.  There's a old CJ2A but he had his hands full to wave one...  Don't see too many other CJ's anymore.  Kinda sad really.  Maybe I should put a CJ fromt clip on my Jepe to help represent.
