Yep blew the motor in my 02 TJ! 50,000 miles on it, boy am I pissed. Never leaked or burnt a drop of oil, then trip home 8 quarts of oil in 800 miles. Take it to a shop, they pull the motor and send it to a machine shop. The machine shop says,"cylinders are scored, bearings are scored, crank is scored, valve guides are gone, seals are toast"
Sorry just venting on a $2500 rebuild fee!

Damn dude there is a guy from Mo. on great lakes jeep thing forum selling a used 2.5 with trans and transfer case couldnt you do better than 2500
-
Its at a shop that I trust, $2500 to rebuild mine, $2000 for one out of a burnt out Jeep or $2500 for a Jasper.

is that like a hipo crate motor or what....then I could see it
-
couldn't you do an obd2 compliant swap for about the same?
-
you could do a conversion for cheaper. There's no way they can justify $2500 to rebuild a 4cyl thats insanity. IMO
-
Yea, I want to rebuild my 2.5L and bore it 60 over and port and shave the head. But that will be cheaper doing it myself. Prolly get out for less than a $1000. For $2500 you could prolly pay someone to put a 6 cylinder in for you.
-
Definately do a conversion - I bought my 4 banger with the intent of blowing it up someday and stuffing a bullet proof 383 in, hate on SBC all you want - it's a realiable, cheap build. It's takes moderately more skill than an in/out 4banger for 4banger - but it'll be worth it.

Probably not. You would have to change motor mounts, Transmission, exhaust, computers, and wiring harness. I think JP ran an article about this exact subject in which a 4 banger owner should replace what they had or go with a V8 or 4.0 and the 4.0 option was more than twice what it would cost to put a new 2.5L in.

I was thinkin more along the lines of buying a donor or something to do the swap from.
New parts would be a fortune, you are right

my buddy owns a garage and does jeep v-8 swaps all the time. $2500-$3500 for evrything depending on the motor you want. Granted they are decent milage used drivetrains but he garauntees his work so it can be done for that price. But to each his own. I've weighed it out myself, If I can't get my 2.5 rebuilt and do an ax-15 swap for less than $1500 I'm just going to convert it. So if you wanna come to Allentown I'll hook you up with him. haha

Without the same motor (I wanted Vortex V6), I thought the same thing. When I bought the Jeep, motor didn't matter, cuz in the grand built, it too would be replaced....
Then I hear that this 2.5L won't break (well almost always). I've built it and built it, darn things running strong. Although when it does go, I'll be banished to www.V6bangerJP.com
