Well, I don't get out much but stay very busy usually. Set my whole night aside to go to a friends house to hang out and he called it off. So I think about dumb things instead.
Car: 1995-1999 Subaru Legacy Station Wagon or Outback. These cars are AWD street machines. People "offroad them" but in a way that makes anyone with a Jeep... Well, laugh usually.

So heres my dumb idea that vaguely relates to 4 cylinder Jeep 4 wheeling.
People wanting to drift these cars and other similar Subarus weld the center differential to put all the power to the rear. The center diff works like a limited slip diff to split the torque between the wheels. Weld it, and it all goes to the rear, and these transmissions then still withstand drifting. Apparently then, they could withstand offroading.
Run a stub shaft from a welded diff to a Suzuki Samurai divorced transfer case. Grab a BIG lift kit for a Jeep Wrangler TJ with the improved suspension link mounting parts that change where the links attach (so essentially these parts could be fabricated onto the car body and a complete suspension is included in the kit). Run a D30/Ford 8.8 setup and run 4.88's and 35's. If you went with a D44 front you could go 5.13s. For shocks/struts I'd run coilovers on re-enforced Legacy strut towers. Fabricate driveshafts and custom brake hoses. Fabricate bump stops.
If I got ambitious, it would become a Subaru Brat conversion. Cut the station wagon top parts off, weld the doors, smooth the body, fab a fiberglass bed, use a Ford Ranger rear window... Of course body armor, a rollcage and a winch would be in order. Complete it with retro Brat vynils and a set of weird little seats and joystick handles.

Anyway... :uhoh: Don't give yourself a nosebleed when your palm hits your face.

if you cut the body you need to weld in a chassis or reinforcements (it's a unibody construction, will fold like wonderbread before you toast it).

Make Jeepers laugh? Really? I kinda like them. The GL's have a real 2-speed transfer case. Personally, I wouldn't bother with what you're preposing though. The last pic is a GL on a complete subframe. I've seen it done to a Pinto on a EB Bronco chassis before.

I like Scooby Doo's too! :doggy: Almost got me a Brat once. ;)

Jeffy, great pics.
Most Subaru owners, even the ones that try to go offorading, don't go as far as the pictures. Pic number 4... The gearing would likely be so terrible with tires that large that you would nearly smoke your clutch trying to go over an obstacle as sometimes my car struggles with the 195 60 15's! I didn't know the Brat GL's had a 2 speed transfer case, thats pretty neat.

A guy over on the subaru forum...
I am too poor to afford REAL offroading stuff that would need to go into my proposed build and my Subaru is too nice to hack up into a truck.
