Well he should have had a Fire Ext. Since he was on his way to work at the fire Department.
-
Where's that?
-
Bakersfield area.
-
So that's like 58 between Barstow and Bakersfield.
-
Could be 99, 58 or Rosedale Hwy. But could be 58 going into Bakersfield from Keene.

99's usually 4 lanes and doesn't get that close to the mountains. Rosedale Hwy is a strip of 58 that's all in the city. Looks a lot like 58 outside of Tehachapi
So did he figure out what happened? Transmission overheat and puke onto the engine?

Haven't heard yet.

Well he has traced it down to a breather or the trans dipstick tube. Both in the same area.

What's the fluid level of the transmission? The breather on the firewall next to the battery is for the transfer case. It would be 1000x more likely the transmission overheated then the transfer case.

It was the trans and its toast. Is there a good automatic that would be a good replacement for what he has.

Yes, the TF904 aka; 30RH which happens to be the stock transmission.

His is a newer jeep I believe it has the 4 speed automatic.
-
The stock 4 speed auto in the later TJ's isn't very suitable for it. If he is good at wrenching a AW4 out of an XJ is a much better choice.
The 4 speed auto has caused a lot of vehicle fires in JK's

Well, if he wants to get it back on the road fast and cheap he should stick with what it has. Otherwise, swap away. A 32RH/TF999 would be pretty bullitproof but he's lose OD. AW4 is an option as well. If he wants to do adapters then a TH700R4 or a 4L60E would be a good choice. They're super common unlike the AW4 but adapters aren't cheap.

He says she is naked right now so this is the only photo he will send. Fixing not only the trans but getting a 3" lift too.

What he3 says he is doing to it.
Drive line new trans, bigger trans cooler, then hopefully new exhaust winch 3 more inches of lift and 35's. I'm gonna go through rear ends and transfer case while I've got it stripped down also.
