 :brick:
good thing it was in the driveway, was messing with the t-case shifters and had to turn it to be able to shift in high/low, completely stopped turning. I thought at first i have a bad connection to the battery, or the battery died, not so. took it out, 2 of 4 brushes were out of service. Good thing i had a core that was dropped and bent (so it broke one of the magnets), luckily the brush plate and brushes were ok (not great so i will still need to order one for the future). Funny thing is that it only "coughed" a couple of times, so should know for long trips to have a spare brush plate in the toolbox (it's easy to replace, the more involved part is to take the starter out).
anyway, that's my rant for today.

Always something to fix. When my starter went bad it was the solenoid that failed.

trying to find a repair kit or at least brushes, you can get them for the 4.0L starteer but not for the 2.5L

They don't use the same starter? or at minimum the same brushes?

starter is totally different. From what i can tell the 6cyl has 2 brushes and the 4 cyl has 4 brushes. I called a local parts store and they have nothing listed, $180 for a reman + core if you don't have one (total ripoff), will probably get a new one off Amazon for less than $100.

works well with the scavenged brushes, i'll probably get a new one at some point from Amazon since there's no better option (reman is more expensive).

Make sure to check Summit Racing for a starter. Free shipping.

I played the "tap on it with a wrench" game for a while before I finally went to autozone for a stock replacement.

yeah, mine didn't budge to that, been working well since i put those brushes on though, but i will buy a replacement.

Why is it that no matter how much you wrench, Jeeps are just incapable of running without any issues (some as simple as a light bulb going bad, but still!) for more than 14 days?
-
Yep, I've got a page-long backlog of things that probably should be fixed but are not urgent. Lots of things come up as side effects of mods or things you notice while doing a mod, or due to trail damage. But I like my YJ and have no plans to sell it.

It's a 'Jeep thing'... Actually, it's an old car thing...

my problem is that i can't use it for more than 2 weeks before i start another project on it.

Sell it? What's that?

You'll get bored of that and soon wish for the day when you can just drive it and not have to think about other things.

Dang just figured mine out She turns 30 next year. Now all the extra little work I have to do makes sense.

You mean 20, otherwise your YJ would have been built in 1984.

A good way to spend a bunch of money buying a new jeep and upgrading it to outperform your old jeep :truck:... either way you just have to empty every pocket.

Yep, I should not post late at night.

That would be the smart way to do it. Just sell the Jeep and get a new Rubicon. Throw a short lift on it, winch, etc and call it good. It would be cheaper and not to mention faster in the long run.

A JK Rubicon can be very capable with very few mods but people get carried away and it ends up expensive anyway. First the cost the the JK, then a long arm lift, front axle beef up or replacement, charcoal canister relocation, muffler relocation, stronger skid plates, new drive shafts, bumpers, other armor, winch, etc.

That's common for new guy's. It happens with all new Jeeps. Those of us who have been there done that are usually much more reserved and frankly realistic of their goals.

I KNW Art and Sharp were new guys at Jeeping deep inside... Adding all that long arm lift, triangulated suspension, armor, big tires, doublers, etc... :wall:

Well we're talking newbies here. They often don't really know what they want other then the 'look'. That's why you get a lot of goofy builds out there.
Once you know what you want, it's a whole different matter.

Stock Rubicons are quite capable. But after one trip to Moab and stacking rocks and heavily using the skid plates to keep up with the other jeeps in the group a bit of an upgrade was needed. There sure are a lot of mall crawling jks with lifts and tires around though. you could do most anything with a 2 inch lift and 33s if you drive correctly (in a 2 door at least, 4 door may need some more for the brakeover angle).
if you started from a stock jeep to sell to get a Rubicon it would be definitely less expensive. As long as you plan to keep with the stock axles. I was about to the point with my yj where I wanted to bump up a tires size flatten the belly pan and get a briefer rear axle when I traded it in on the Rubicon. New jeep fixed all that, the frame and body rust, wore out engine, and the annoying internal clutch slave cylinder issues so all in all a win win. :rtfm:
I don't see why people do muffler relocation its up and out of the way more than the gas tank on a yj or tj. You would rip off the rear bumper before hitting the muffler in my experience. Next I need a front bumper to get a winch and the rear bumper for a tire carrier to support the 35x12.5" spare. Both bumpers have picked fights with rocks and are battle scared anyways. :driving:

i know this is a little late on this subject, but i just went through this on the weekend. The 4.0 starter brushes are the same ones for the 2.5 i found them both on amazon and advance auto parts i think the maker is omix or something like that. There is two parts you have to buy the brush holder which has two brushes on it, and then the two brushes that bolt onto the holder making it 4 brushes. What i ended up doing was getting a 4.0 starter from the junk yard b/c they didnt have any 2.5 and i just swapped the whole back half b/c it had just be replaced on that eng its only .75 inches longer. Im not sure of the correct names of the parts but its the black housing and back bolted right up to the front half of my stock starter. Just some FYI

that's a good tip, thanks for letting us know - i did find the new parts for 4.0L but couldn't for 2.5L, ended up scavenging the parts from a busted 2.5L starter and bought a new starter after that for $80 (wasn't that bad given that it included the solenoid and it was not a reman but brand new). If i knew the brushes are the same i would have probably gone with that instead. I might rebuild the old one with new brushes as a spare, with all the new parts made in China you never know when it gives out on you.
