Title: Sears DieHard Platinum
Post by: Mozman68 on August 03, 2013, 08:09:59 PM
Well they don't make the Platinum.  It's made by Odyssey Battery

Why does the Sears site say the Platinum isn't compatible?  Only one size?

It's because technically, it's oversized compared to the stock battery.  They don't want you to get a battery that's not in the same size as the original.

Hmmm...so it should fit?  I think it's the same size as my red top.  I think it's about time for a change and the Platinum is a good deal compared to the same Odyssey...$50 cheaper.

Well, you might need to do some tinkering with the battery tray.  It's a wide battery.  Measure the battery tray and see if it will fit.  If you have access to a welder you could mod the tray.  Otherwise you could get a Rugged Ridge tray.

Ok, I looked at it and the Optima 800U is a 34/78 which should be the same as the Platinum.  The Group 65 is really nice but way too big without mods.

It's an AGM battery.  Mount it however you want.  It's made by Odyssey battery.

It goes on sale fairly often.  I've seen it drop in price a few times when I've looked.  just keep an eye out if you're not in a hurry.

Couple years ago Consumer Reports tested car batteries and Die Hards came out on the bottom of the pile.  Duralast Gold (Auto Zone) or Everstart MAXX (Wal-Mart) were rated much better.  These days I get one or the other of those.  Just sayin'.

I doubt they tested the Platinum's.  Compared to the regular Die-Hards, they are over twice as expensive.  That's because they aren't AGM's and a different company makes them.  Osyssey makes the Platinum's for SEAR's.  Odyssey is a well known company in the AGM battery business.

I know when I went from the stock battery to my Optima 800U, the starter would noticeably spin with more gusto.

so are these better than Optima ones? (price-wise they're more expensive when not on sale, so i would think yes but wouldn't mind hearing why/how)

From what I understood when I was in the market, Optima has had recent quality issues. They moved their plant overseas and now the quality control is a bit reduced. From the reviews I read,  I chose the platinum.

The main difference is that these batteries are easy to find and have more CCA.  Not to mention are also Deep Cycle/Starters.

They are not made overseas.  The plant moved to Mexico when Johnson Control bought them out in 2000.  Quality went down hill but supposedly they got things fixed about 10 years ago.

Excide has a pretty nice AGM as well and they can be had for about 130 bucks.
