Hello, it's getting pretty warm out, so I was wondering if anyone knows how much a hard top from a 1999 wieghs. I only have my roomate to help me take it off. She's 5'7" 115lbs and I'm about 5'8" 110lbs so I'm a bit worried about trying to get it off ourselves.

I'm sure Jeffy knows it to the ounce...but I just took mine off last week using the winch lift sold through 4wd.com. It said to test it by hanging 200 lbs. of weight on the mechanism.
I would guess it is about that...maybe a little less. It was scary pulling it off the first time and having hang from the ceiling of my garage, but it has been there a week with no stress marks, so I'm guessing it is okay.
Easy to remove and now it is stored without taking up any space....kick ass!!!
Well worth the $140?? it cost.

you just gotta fatten up a little :) hehe
it's all in how you balance it when you remove it.... or go buy a 2 piece best top and remove it by yourself in 5 mins time.....

You will really want to get someone else to help you. I believe the top is around 120-150lbs but is really awkward. If that liftgate opens up while you're carring it you're f'ed. It throws the ballance off and you will have very little time to recover. A third person to help hold the lift gate closed and to keep it straight is a good idea. Or else take the liftgate off and shed a little weight.
You'll probably have to slide it off from the back anyway. One person on each side near the windows.
I think the easiest way to take the top off is to backup in a garage that has exposed rafters. Use ratchet straps and lift the top slightly to get it suspended. I can think of two ways to strap it. One is to have the strap come in from the rear and go out the door opening. This will support the top by the roof. You could support it from the lower edges but the top will want to spread open with the weight. You could also make a lifting base like the $140 one out of wood or metal. Once it's in the air you should be able to park nose in and the top shouldn't come in contact with the hood if it's high enough.

its really not that bad to take noff its like 100% harder putting it back on. But yea like jeffy said make sure the lift gate dont open, duct tape it if you have to. I was surprised when i fist took off my top and saw how much it didn't weigh. I think it looks a lot heavier than it really is.

Also, does anyone know what size torx? wrench I'll need? thanks again.
-
Im pretty sure its a t35, dont quote me tho if im wrong guys let me kno., and the hex screws on the window might be 1/4 socket but that is a just a guess.
-
windshield hinges use a t40 so t35 would be a good guess for the hardtop as they are definatly a little smaller....
-
Well, me and my rommie took off the hard top yesterday. It was much heavier than we though, but we managed to get it off with a little hustle. Too bad it's a pain to store as well. HAving the top off is pretty great though and well worth it.

Thats why I sold my hard top. The sailcloth bestop is all i need, even in the dead of winter(just make sure you dont bend the rear window in the cold!!!!)

I'm just the opposite. I've had one hardtop that was from Steel Horse and it leaks and I hated it after a while. Went back to the OEM soft top. Then swapped to a newer soft top that was from some other mfg. Took a 1500 mile road trip and the top sucked. Actually it blowed, blowed out the side windows at 65mph. What a POS that was. Saw a hardtop at a friends place that he was thinking about selling. Checked it out and thought about it for a week. Drove 400miles to pick it up, throw it on the Jeep and drive back home. What a difference that made. Long highway runs are a lot easier. None of that top flapping nonsense. Noise levels are still pretty loud at 70mph but not as bad as with the soft top and half doors.
Bestop's quality seems to have dropped a bit in the past few years. (My OEM/Bestop lasted 13 years.) A few of OEM tops were having stitching falling apart after a year. Honestly, I don't think there is a prefect top.
In any case, hard top for crappy weather, bikoni top or commando when it's nicer for me.

i know the hard top for the 2005 rubicons isnt to horibly hevy but it is awqward.. my dad and i took it off and caried it around to the back yard by ourselves but ya you might want as different second person or a 3rd person.

This isn't answering the hardtop weight question... But when I went looking for the Jeep I wanted... I'll I wanted was a hardtop and hard doors. I figured that I could have always bought a softop, but a factory hardtop was the only way to wheel Washington State in the winter. Snow wheeling with heat!!
And yes, for our 3 weeks of summer, it is awesome pulling the top and, as Jeffy puts it, going commando!!
Nothin' sexier than seeing me driving around topless, or in a bikini ;) (If I do say so myself!!)
-
another bonus with having the hard top off is I swear I get better gas mileage. Now I have to take off the doors and see where else I could cut wieght. :P

Cool! 'Cept you made me look into making one of these cheezy freebie websites! Kinda a 'get to know me site'. Although I'm pretty lame on these sorta things so when it's good to go I'll link it to my signature.
So... What'd ya think? Any questions??
