Anyone put a 242 in a TJ behind a 2.5L? I did the conversion on a 4.0L Comanche a number of years ago since the 242 works so nicely on the road in the winter. Haven't found much searching around the web except threads where someone asks and then 20 posts of why full time 4wd sucks ;)

It's been done in the past but it's not common. I've seen more people with GC's go the other way and swap to a 231.

My younger sons GC has a 249 in it, wouldn't have it any other way. I get that for off-roading that people want the 231 because it is marginally stronger than a 242, but this TJ will likely never go offroad.

There used to be a company that made a VC that you'd attach to the front driveshaft. Same principle as the 242/249... I see no reason not to swap one in if that's what you want.

Go for it. You'll likely need to swap in the appropriate 21spl input shaft but that's about it.

The 30RH has a 23 spline shaft. In any event, they made 21 spline 242's - 88-90 AW4 Cherokees came with them. That is what I used in my sons 90 comanche
