Title: Scanner
Post by: jfrabat on October 14, 2013, 12:13:29 PM
I decided to get a scanner to replace my code reader, so I went and ordered this Innova 3120 CanOBD2&1 Tool Kit (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KID2ZC/ref=pe_385040_30332190_pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1).  But after receiving it, it seems this is also just a code reader, as I cannot see values like mixture and other stuff like that live.  Did I get the wrong one?  I thought (when I ordered it) that the freeze frame function would be able to tell me what the readings were, but no I am not sure that it will.  I have yet to try it in the Jeep (I did plug it to my DD, a '09 BMW 320i, but I cannot see the real live data).

The only diagnostic tool I know to work with OBDI is the DRBII.  Most of those scanners can only scan the codes.  I'm not sure if you can pull that much data even with a DRBII though.  I've never owned one.  I do know most modern scanners won't be much help with an OBDI system though.  Even the Snap-On scanners are hit and miss.

Well, this is definitely nicer than the other one (especially for OBDII, which my other 2 cars are), so I may just sell the other one.  Or maybe keep the other one in the Jeep (it already is there) and keep this one in the tool chest.  There is just no sense in shipping it back after I have already payed for import duties, shipping to Panama and sales tax here!

That's the one thing I don't like about OBDI,  no cheap scanners.  And even if you do get one that works, you're not going to be able to see much as OBDI doesn't have all the diagnostic data like ODBII does.

The Innova model you purchased is the same one I have.  It will read codes on the ODBI system.  For a YJ, you need the Jeep adapter (orange in my kit) and make sure you select ODBI from the menu after startup.  You will not see any real-time data (e.g., AFR).

Oh, well...  I'll try to sell the Auto X-Ray one then.  If I cant, I'll just keep it in the Jeep.
