As a rule trucks, like cars, come from the manufacturer with a combination of tire size, gearbox, and drive-axle ratio to give good acceleration from a stop along with an appropriate and economical cruising range. Everything working together in combination. We can change this combination a little here or there without significantly upsetting the overall performance of the truck. However, when we go to an extreme, like installing 35" or larger tires, the now lifted truck's personality is going to be changed dramatically. While the lifted big tire truck will look way cool, it will suffer in pulling power and acceleration. It will also be running below the peak efficiency range of the motor when cruising at freeway speeds. A common fix to get the power back is to change the ring and pinion ratio of the drive axle, or axles in the case of a four-wheel drive. This is an appropriate fix for up to say 33" tires. Trucks with larger tires, however, would require such a numerically high axle ratio that the pinion gear size becomes small in diameter and thus weak; then, comes the breakage.
