Title: Trans. Oil Leaking
Post by: 95 Lowbuck on August 02, 2014, 02:44:34 PM
My Ax5 seams to leak oil when I take it on long trips.
Especially up in the mountains when I'm buzzing it in 3rd and 4th gear.
Penzoil synchromesh has a distinctive smell so I know what it's coming from.
My problem is where. Not coming from anywhere obvious, and not over filled.
I'm concerned the vent for the trans. is clogged or a vent line is pinched.
Is there a vent line?
Anyone else have this problem?

Trans rear seal between trans and transfer case.. its even got a little drain hole near the mount for when this happens so it will spread out all over you rskidplate and coat everything to the rear with oil...  :brick: I'm about to replace mine for the third time in 220K miles..

are there any visible leaks (drops/spots under the Jeep after you stop)? if not it can be just the trans oil overheating and you get the smell thru the vent.

There is oil on the driveway, all over the skid plate.
This only seems to happen when I take long trips.
I can commute 1/2 hour to work all week and it won't happen.
This trans. shifts great and makes no noise, but I think your right,
it is getting over heated and pushing it out some where.
I've read that some AX5's don't have a vent and just rely on the shifter
on top to vent the trans. Will have to look under the boot and see.
Maybe I should try a synthetic oil.

The weep hole is on the passenger side bottom of the area where the tranny bolts up to the tcase, on mine its pretty obvious when that rear seal leaks, It will occasionally when perfectly good and I wheel up steep stuff drip some.. Especially with power trips out of a bowl in the sand..

The AX5 can be overfilled easily if you have a drop kit due to a lift..

I run 5w50 synthetic in mine, its  been rebuilt with the bearing shrouds removed so regular trans fluid doesn't work anymore in mine.
FYI the Toyota version came with 20w50 from the factory in 1985.. It was a synthetic Penzoil product.
