Too bad the axle tubes, C's and center casting on the jk d44's are significantly thinner (weaker) than the first Gen D44s. front axle on my JK looks like a twig compared to the chevy d44 i am using in my other jeep project.

Yeah, that's pretty messed up for stock axles.  Fronts are or were, typically larger then the rear.  A rear would be 2.5, 2.75 or 2-7/8" while the front was sometimes 3.0".

Most of the Ford high-pinion 44s have 2 3/4" tubes with 1/2" wall thickness.  There are some that have 3/8" wall thickness and a few that have 3" tubes.  Clearly much beefier than the modern 44s.  I have one out of a 1976 F150 and it's pretty heavy.
