Title: what do you respect more???
Post by: TJZep on April 08, 2006, 12:30:36 PM
hey guys.  Just wondering.  I was down at a local car audio store(im friends with the owner, i used to compete in Iasca years ago) and some kid pulled in in a yj.  This thing had what looked like home made shackles on it(which is cool if they last, but they looked rickety) and about a 5 inch body lift.  He had what looked like ancient mtr 35's on(very little tread left)  He looked at my tj and didnt see me standing a few feet away.  He looked at his buddies and said "oh, how cute! another tj on 33's!  Now ive only had my tj a few months(in the winter) and it still looks nice.  So i guess you could confuse it for a wouss jeep with big tires for no reason.  I walked over and asked what was wrong with 33's, explaining that i had a 4 banger and drove it(not daily) on the highway, and wanted a good balance.  Now this just may be my ego, but after talking, i found out that he had no clue what a sye is, the shackles were given to him by a friend, and he has stock everything.  I think that I would rather have 33's on upgraded axles with selectable lockers, a real lift(no or 1inch body lift) and 4.88 gears then his hack job.  He seemed to backpedal once i showed him the switches for the ected's and told him i had 4.88s and was contemplating an nth degree long arm kit.  I also informed him that the second he nailed the skinny pedal on a trail, his 175'000 mile d35 would probably snap axles like pencils, and i was worried bout mine even with the s35 kit and 33's with a 4 banger.(he had the 4.2 crapmill)  His friends jabbed at him agreeing with me.  What do you think?  anyone can put a huge body lift, very used 35's (and to be honest, no way his tires weren't taking his fenders OFF the second it flexed)  Do you think he needs a lesson in jeep ettiquite??

Well, depending on the 35's, when they're worn down, they are probably in the 33" range.  5" body lift?  That's just scary although is legal in some states.  That would mean, a small kid could probably squeeze between the frame and the body.  Not safe at all on or offroad though.  I've seem people buy cheap shackles from Auto Zone and throw them on their Jeeps.  They look bad, are awfully skinny and screw up the pinion angles.

So, did you kick him in the nuts too?

A friend of mine is a child psychologist who specializes in cases with mild mental retardation, and one of the first things they were taught in grad school was not to argue with the clients - I think it applies in this case as well.  My buddy always jokes about how that one little piece of advice always keeps them from getting pissed in situations like that one - just say to yourself "don't fight with the retards" and I promise you'll walk away smiling even if they still think their 5'' BL and 35's are "bad ass".

Ya that's a weird situation...

I guess I'm om the other side of the coin on this one...   I mean right from the start I'd come out laughing at him.  I know how scary some of those things are, and cheap too.  I'd start offering suggestions on upgrading and things to get rid of.   I guess it weird on my side of the fence.

My Jeep is pretty built.  It's not a rock buggy but for a street driven Jeep it is pretty hardcore.  So if he came driving up to the audio store and saw mine Jeep sitting there, I'm usually standing way back and watching them admire, or I'm standing close enough to it to educate.

So as I type this I think two things...  #1, I do admire my Jeep.  Next to my family it's one of my biggest prides and joys...  #2, Agree to not 'fight with the clients'.  Some people just don't know.  They're cheap and throw on whatever they came for as cheaply as possible.  Seeing something like that, I wouldn't been laughing at them, certainly not taking any crap.

i always try to give suggestions on ways to improve... even if my jeep isn't a prime example.   usually i turn it around and compare my jeep's shitty _____ to the other person's setup and make suggestions that would be an upgrade to both parties... that was it doesnt look like i'm bashing him/her, instead i'm sharing ideas that i have found while searching for ways to fix my own jeep that would also help them....

seems to work good, i guess....
