Jeeps been making some wierd noises, got underneath and there is a whole bunch of play in the driveshafts. I front ujoint/knuckle joint is shot. Whats the best action. Remove the entire shaft bring it it to get repaired or just replace the whole damn thing with something aftermarket. Might as well upgrade while Im at it. Thinking of replacing both the front and rear driveshafts with something more HD. Any suggestions, retailers?
Thanks

HD? You mean the whole shaft or just the U-joints. I'd just pop the U-joints out and replace them. I'd recommend diing it yourself. You'll never know when a U-joint might break on the trail and you'll be SOL for a $10 U-joint.

Its not really a Ujoint in the front. It is on front driveshaft just infront of where it comes out of the transfer case. There is a whole bunch of play and it looks like its close to failing. Either binding up or coming apart all together. It is making a bunch of noise and Im sure its putting stress on the transfer case.

You have a CV joint I'm guessing. Technically it's not a CV but a Double Cardon joint which has two U-joints in there.

Yeah, its got a bunch of play in it like I said. Any guidance on replacing it?

Replace the U-joints in it. SHouldn't be too difficult. There are a few different websites on how to remove the U-joint. It's good to know how.
I know how much I've never had to do one yet,
You can get a U-joint press for pretty cheap from Harbor Frieght, too.

can anyone tell me the u-joint size for a 1988 YJ 4.2 with a dana 35 rear. i have tried to get one before, but both were the wrong size. the smallest one was i think 3.5" and it was too big. if anyone has the size, please let me know, it broke while i was playing in the dirt today.

Jeeps used a 1310 and a 1330 series U-joint for the upper and lower U-joint. (1310 is the lower.) Later on then changed it to 1310 for both U-joints to cut cost.
The 1310 series u-joint measures approximately 3-7/32". The 1330 should measure approximately 3 5/8" wide.

thanks, now that its fixed, it almost seems to have more power!

Cool, so the numbers works for ya?

I was under the impression that most YJ's, up until about '93 or so, used 1310 ujoints at each end of the driveshafts. Seems my experience has found 1330 ujoints used at the rear pinion yokes of the newer YJ's. Then they switched back to 1310 everywhere for the TJ's.
