I'm not big on the Kubota swaps since they're really underpowered but there are people doing them.
This guy's been documenting his. for a few months now.

Seeing as the Kubota V2403 makes ~60hp and 121 ft-lbs of torque and weights 441 lbs I have to agree with you that it seems that there are much better options for engine swaps even if they find the kubota for dirt cheep. What would be interesting (but very expensive) is a chevy 2.7l swap from their new half tons (348 ft-lbs from 1500-4000 rpm). Would be interesting for jeep to offer a similar engine in the wrangler but they went the mild hybrid route which I'll reserve comment on as I haven't driven one....

The problem with the Chevy 2.7L is that you'd really want a crate version to come out. Or at least for there to be enough of them in salvage yards to make it cheap. I don't think anyone's done a standalone wire harness for them. Honestly though the RePower 2.8L from Cummins isn't a bad option. Everything's new so it's expensive but you get just about everything you need. 2020 is when the diesel Jeep will supposedly come out. The main problem with diesels in the US is getting them to run clean. Europe and the US focus on different things. IIRC, Europe focuses more on CO and COx while the US is more about NOx and Particulate Matter (PM).
