I found the annoying squeek that sounded like it was coming from behind the steering wheel in the dash. It turned out to the the driver's side front body mount. I heard it while pulling myself under the jeep on a creeper. I was always looking in the wrong spot before (standing on my head while looking under the dash). I've got poly bushings (not the lift kind) instead of the factory ones and evidently the culprit had come loose a little bit. It was still snug but not tight at all. A small amount of movement would cause the squeek. Now it's smooth sailing again on the trails. Almost feels like I'm in a new vehicle....well kind of! :lol:

You better not be telling us you've got a quiet Jeep!! ;) My dad used to say about his office desk, "A clean desk is the sign of a cluttered mind..."
Isn't a quiet Jeep almost like the same thing?
And on another note... aren't squeaks just forcing us to get louder stereo's?

:o It's by all means not quiet with the 4cyl exhausting through a glass pack and the grooved 36" tires howling over the ground. To me those are enjoyable sounds :D . That squeek was a PITA. I suppose if I drove it more I would have had to have found it sooner but it was somewhat tolerable since the jeep is used only for fun.
The noise level will be going even higher here in the next few days as the top's about to come off!! 8) I love this time of year! It's such a neat feeling the first time you cruise around with the top off after having it on all winter.
As for the stereo ugrade....wouldn't do me very much good anyway as the wife would be hollering at me to turn it down. She doesn't appreciate ROCKIN' tunes as much as I do :P

What about a really loud belt squeak at start-up?? Any easy solution for that?
Had the belt replaced a few months ago when I first bought it....the sqeal when I start up the engine cold is REALLY loud and annoying...of course, it goes away after about 10 seconds or more, but I feel like a real white trash piece of crap when I start up my Jeep.

rub a bar of soap on the contact side of the belt (engine off).

don't laugh, I've stared at many motors that squeeked and considered it (while running) haha

I've seen it done before. Luckily it was a plastic fan and flexed enough not to break nor was it sharp enough that it would take a finger off.

I think my Jeep knew I was writing about it....squeek has gotten worse since this afternoon. Used to go away if I reved a little bit....now it goes away after 5-10 seconds of warm up and squeeks when I rev. Was just pulling out of 7-Eleven with some hottie little high school chicks checking out the Jeep (maybe me too??hah) and as I'm pulling away...SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!! Better get that bar of soap out.

You have that auto tentioning things so you can't just tighten it. How's the ribbed side look? Lots of cracks? Any glossy marks on either side? Might be time to replace the belt.

if the belt is good and the tnesioner is doing it's job then 1 or more of your pulley's is trying not to spin hence causing the belt to squeal as it passes over it.... see if you can narrow down which pulley it is. you can soak it in WD40 or PB BLASTER to verify if that's the problem once you figure out which one it is. Then it's just a matter of relacement or constant lubricating.

Actually I think the belt is too NEW...probably finally getting its flex dialed in. I will try the tensioner and lubing the wheels....didn't know it was that easy.
My old Rabbit GTI alternator belt used to squeek....had to loosen the alternator mount and have someone pull up on it has hard as they could while I tightened the bolt again.

don't think you wanna lube them, afterall they are already slipping. sometimes the belts get a little glazed over, that's why a little soap mixed with the friction and heat of the belts slipping cleans them right off, and VIOLA! belts that grip and don't squeek. Or just get one of those fake blow off valves and........ nevermind. :P

Wasn't planning on lubing the belt....was going to lube the axis of the wheels on the motor. Put a little soap on the exposed portion of the belt this morning before I left for work, but I will have to repeat again and again as so little of it is exposed at one time.....maybe I'll just do it while the engine is running (oh yeah...remember the post above...stupid, stupid, stupid...) :D

no really, i don't think you'd lube the belts or use the soap while running, but you can never be to safe. I have a hard time being totally serious, of coarse the humor doesn't work as well on line. or maybe I'm just not as funny as I think I am......... nah.... that can't be it. :?

aw i only have a soft top for my jeep so it lives for the sumer.. but as far as a radio goes i dont have one.. the old one fried befor i got the jeep becasue of a leaky windsheld and rain water runing down the dash and through the radio.... i havent had enough time to fix qwhat the old owner mased up to put in the old radio so that i can even start to think about geting a new radio and some speakers that wokrk
