Title: Tow Dolly
Post by: Jesse-James on May 02, 2006, 05:12:47 PM
Hey all,
I'm in the market for a two wheel dolly to pull my YJ around with. Never used on before, but the tow capacity on the tow rig is 5000lbs so a full trailer would be too heavy. Anyone use one of these on a regular basis? Any how-to's, what to look for, what not to buy, etc.

It would be appreciated.

i used one all summer, i worked with boats and jet skis. They are pretty easy and straight foward to used. I don't think there are any to aviod buying, but i don't know for sure. I think it'd probably be a pain in the a$$ to pull 5000 lbs by hand but if ur up for it go a head.

No problem, I just wanted to get away from flat towing with a tow bar because of instability and side shear. Plus I would have the option of putting either axle on the dolly if something breaks (I think)  :?

You might want to check on this, but I was told not to use a tow dolly on a jeep unless you have lockout hubs. Something about having the front tires locked down while the rear wheels are turning. Was told it would be alright if you removed the front drive shaft.  :?:

I bought a car hauler so I never checked it out.

i use a full trailer but as as far as the above post... it will all depend on your transfer case and front axle....

I am planning on rear wheels down and driveshaft disconnected at the D35 rear, but I believe NP231 TC and D30 front, stock 95 parts in a 4silly auto.

BTW, is there a replacement for the straps at the D35 yoke? U bolts or something to make it easier to disconnect/reconnect?

Anything I can do to work smarter, not harder!(http://www.chiefshuddle.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/checkitout.gif)

Also, how much does your full trailer weigh? I am going this route to stay around 4000lbs or less with the jeep.

we used to flat tow them (because the 2 manin jeeps we takle off road or a cj2a and a cj3a and we offroad a few hundered miles away dso driving them isnt practicul) but now we have a 20some odd foot encloses trailer that we use which can fit both jeeps in it..

i don't know how much my full trailer weighs but i towed it with a 97 suburban 1500 a few times which was ok but now if i have to go anywhere i hook it up to my '06 Duramax 2500HD.....  i wouldn't ever try to tow it with anything smaller than a fuill size truck, imo

stock yj drivetrain you have no need to disconnect the rear drivetrain if i understand it correctly.... just leave transfer case in neutral and go....
