Post by: saylor240 on May 08, 2006, 04:15:20 PM
thank you every one for the advice and information available on this website ..when i was over in afganistan i had my mind set on a 1997 wrangler with the straight six ...but when i got home i test drove a few and looking at prices and mods ended up with a 1995  four banger ...from the looks so far it has been in a garage and no one has turned a bolt on it ...runs very smooth and four wheel works great ...its a clean canvas and i cant wait to get started on it ...my daughter (4 years old ) loves it . i keep you updated with progress .

yj's suck, real jeeps have round headlights, they are good if you like jeeps that ride like a one ton, and if you like really stiff suspension. should of bought a tj!!!!!!!!!

Here's to your service to your country, Zeitler.   TJs are great.  But, they'll always follow YJs.   Jeep made them that way -- first came the YJ, followed by the TJ and now the JK

You'll say, "yeah, but the TJs have the round headlights like the CJ and models dating to WW2." This is true, they do have the pretty, round headlight grills, the TJs. And, all models in the aforementioned served well.

But, YJs are the first "Wrangler," TJs are the second "Wrangler." You may not like the fact that the TJ is a "Wrangler" like the senior YJ... that's ok.  The good news, Zeitler, is that after you blow a few hundred on a YJ grill and a set of leaf springs, your TJ will look like it's  "first" too.

that's pretty bold and rude to talk like that.  If you build your jeep and have fu wheelin it who cares what model it is.  I never seen anything that says tj are best jeep except for un knowledged opinions.  You like tj's? great but don't down someone else's rig.  I have had my yj for about 8years and when I bought it I looked at tj and didn't like them because of the interior space and I like big beefy leaf springs under me so I can slam the throttle and not worry.  congrats on the buy and have fun.

YJs are cheaper to build than TJs for sure!  I'll keep mine, thanks.

Okay Teufel Hunden, you asked for it.

Real Jeeps have leaf springs.

Even though they don't really need them...

IMO Willys are the "real" jeep! CJs are just a copy... YJs are safer...
TJs has more comforts... JKs... well not sure yet.... more socker mom'esh?...
But I own a TJ and I will build it up when I can afford it...
TJ is what I have... and it has the Jeep name on it... What makes it less than any other jeep? The driver!
I know people that can take TJs in places guys with YJs and CJs cant go...
and the other way around. I guss it starts with the driver that makes a jeep!
Sence Im still a noob... I don't own a "Real" Jeep

BTW Grats on the awsome new ride!

umm i personally like the yj better, that doesn't mean its the better model. They both got the same axles, same tranny, engines, everything, tj's are the more updated, fancy versions. If you want the original jeep, get a cj, that is the true millitary jeep.  I love my yj i like the unsmooth ride.  I really hate fancy cars, so a yj is p[erfect for me.  Its all about your preference, there is no BETTER model.

Ive owned both.   Both are jeeps, both cost way too much money, both break, and both of them are a hellva lot of fun.   Who cares.

YJ's have heavier leaf packs compared to most of the CJ's I hear a popular CJ upgrade is to swap out the leaf packs for the 2.5" YJ leafs. Personally I feel the biggest upgrade to the TJ is the coil spring suspension system which can provide a great ride on road and extreme off road performance after a few upgrades.

Saylor, have fun with your jeep.  Once you start adding/building mods for it, it will never end   Like Guardian7 said,  "real Jeeps are built not bought!".  Welcome to the leaf sprung, 4 bangin, square headlight world!  Not that I wouldn't want a TJ 4.0 for a daily driver, cause I would....just can't afford it.   :(

I'll tell you...  You guys did an excellent job of explaining your sides.  I graciously appreciate the way you all have handled that remark.

I, on the other hand, was a bit pissed.  It's not all all what you drive, it's who you are.  Leaf sprung or coils, round headlights or square...  4.0 or 2.5..  Heck, Toyota, Chevy or Ford (and Dodge too), who cares.  It's about building your toy.  It's about getting out into the wilderness and enjoying tall trees and the dirt beneath your feet.

I can't tell you how many times I hear comments like "Jeeps suck, Toyota's rule!"  Whatever...  enjoy your opinion.  But when you're out there enjoying what nature has given us, not the concrete jungle most of us all live in, who cares who's driving what.

So, zeitlerusmc, good one!  You're right!  Round headlights are the best!!  Seriously!!  No sharp corners to cut yourself.  Round like the Earth.  Balls are round and thank goodness for that!!  How could they bounce straight.  The Sun and all the planets are round, so obviously Jeep had some inspiration from the universe.  Man...  I feel pretty low driving around in my square headlighted, leaf sprung, Yuppie Jeep.  Maybe my headlights dictate what kinda person I am...  pretty square.

Teufel Hunden (devil dogs)- a name give the United States Marines by the German opposition in WWII.

You're right....I didn't understand.  Pretty cool nickname given by the enemy at that time.  I wish our military could fight without their hands tied behind their backs by all of the political BS that there is now.  It's gotta be frustrating as hell for all of the people in service knowing that if we unleashed what we could the terrorists would be scared to death to take all of the pot shots that they do.

I never served.  Now I wish that I had.  I have lots of respect for the men and women in all the armed services (past and present) who keep our great country safe.

To ALL of you on this board who serve/served a HUGE Thank You!

Sorry, Saylor to hijack this thread!

its funny to see how i can make one little comment and get a stir out of all of you, people are telling me to calm down, but i just throw something out there, and get tons of responses to it. first off to the gentleman who said all jeeps break all jeeps cost to much and they are all fun to  wheel, that is the most true statement that could ever be spoken, and to  mr. franklin, wow thanks for that education  . ive owned both yj's and tj's, yj's just take more work to  be a good trail rig, put a stock yj and a stock tj on a flex ramp and see what gets more flex? and in most off road situations you need that articulation to keep all four wheels sticking to the ground to gain traction, but im sure you already knew that!, i know tj's are wranglers im not that ignorant, i just like the sticker i saw the other day that said real jeeps have round headlights. yes yj owners ive seen all the other ones, real jeeps are built not bought and real jeeps have leaf springs. look im seriously not trying to get hard or act bad with any of you, some of you are just taking the stuff i say way too seriously!...... at ease!!! and so you don't think im some rookie jeeper here are my crudentials, 2005 impact orange wrangler se, 2.4l four cyl, 6sp manual, 4 inch teraflex short arm kit,R.E lower adjustable control arms, R.E. gen two quick disco's, 33x12.50's bfg muds, black rock krawler series 152 rims, warn front bumper, fabbed rear bumper with tire carrier, led flush mount taillights, poison spyder tube fenders, kc 6" windshield mounted daylighters, 2 5" pro comp underbody rock lights, flowmaster 40 series delta flow, air-raid cold air intake,4.88 gears and arb's in the works. and nothing was done by anybody except myself

seriously wow calm your self. all i said was my opinion about how i don't like yj's and  then you read it and start spirting off crazy stuff about the earth and personality's and all this deep spirtiual stuff, you take this way to  seriously, so  much you felt it was a good idea to send me a personal message about it. to be quite honest with you my brothers and sisters in arms who give you the chance to sit on your plastic box and type the things you do, and its the service men and women past and present who give you the right to  own what ever vehicle you want and drive where ever and when ever you want. so  pease don't lecture me about my mouth and the things i say on this website i have already apologized if i offended anyone with my comments now please get over it.

Heavier?  As in weight or spring load?  Stock vs. stock a CJ will sit about 1" taller then a YJ.  The leafs on a late model CJ will be 2" wide up front and 2.5" in the rear.  The springs rates are higher on the CJ.  YJ's have solfter spring rates but with the addition of two trackbars, it really stiffens the suspension.

A common swap for CJ'ers is to convert over to 2.5" wide leafs and use YJ or XJ leaf springs.  (The XJ leafs are about the same as the YJ's but the centerpins are offset 6" so it will increase the wheelbase.)  For the front to work though, the front hanger is converted to outboard the frame.

As for this whole 'zeitlerusmc' thing. Since you're new, no one really know how to react.  It just comes off as being a bit dry and in your face when you use a cliche' like that.   I agree, things are taken way too seriously but this is a rebound of the whole Islander fiasco which was before you joined.  It's a bit fresh with the regulars here so people are still a bit jumpy. Bear with us.

I, too, always like to cast disparaging remarks on vehicles I've owned in the past -- it reflects well on my judgement.  And, when I say something "sucks," I, too, also really just mean that it "takes more work".  Glad you've clarified this, Zeitler.    :P

aww i always disliked yj's.. well that was until i got one from a freind of my dads for free  ... so ya yj's are great.. i like that they still had leaf springs so it was easier for us to put the lift on...
