Title: Stainless Exaust
Post by: Lumbernasty on May 11, 2006, 07:07:34 PM
Are there any companies out there making exhausts out of 400 series stainless steel?

I've found that Gibson and Borla are both T-304 stainless...

I'm searching the Banks site, but I can't find it anywhere...

Any particular reason you want T400?

I want to find a 400 series exhaust due to its better corrosion properties at high temperatures and less thermal expansion, just looking to make it last as long as possible.  I did see that Banks was using 400 series but I did not see any products from them for the 2.5 YJ.  Will a 4.0 exhaust system from '95 fit my 2.5?

I really wouldn't worry about finding t400 stainless. Any stainless will do, especially if it is for exaust and not a header. People make their exausts out of aluminun. The temperature of the exaust gases cool down a lot by the time it makes it to and past the cat, and if your only doing a cat back i definately wouldn't worry about it.

Most companies seem to be selling catbacks.  I haven't seen any stainless down pipes out there, where is a good place to find one for a 2.5?

This is because if you you don't have to get CARB certification for anything after the last cat.  So anything ahead of the muffler will need CARB certification to be legal in CA. (CA's has a big influence when it comes to aftermarket car parts)  Since Jeeps are a smaller market, it's not worth it for some companies to make a product then get it certified so they don't make them.  Head/Down/Crossover pipes are usually sold with headers.  It's not worth it for a company to just make the pipe. I believe, Clifford is the only one who makes a header that's not CARB certified.

Best place to get a pipe in stainless steel is at your custom muffler shop.  Not Midus or any other big chain.  If you want one exactly like the stock one then it's pretty easy for them.  For CJ's and YJ's though, it's better to reroute the exhaust a bit.  This requires a bit more work but shouldn't cost more then $150.  The only real fabricating would be to drill and weld the bung for the O2 sensor in the right place.
