Well, unless you do a lot of waterproofing it won't help too much.  ALthough they are used more for dust then water in Australia.

Here's another snorkel (http://www.quadratec.com/products/17000_100_07.htm), too.

The Safari snorkel works on both the 4.0L and the 2.5L...  This routes into a factory air-box and the air-boxes are the same for either motor.
http://www.safari4x4.com.au/docs/snorkel/ss1055.htm

This is a line drawing on how the thing mounts up.

So the whole snorkel thing has a few sales benefits to it...  and two great deficits are 'cutting a hole in your fender' and 'the cost'.  Aside from that, here's the benefits...
It looks cool!!  It looks very overland
It takes air from an outside, higher source.  Cooler air, less dusty air.
If you waterproof your distributor cap, spark plug wires, electric fans, reroute the air vents on your axles, well then the possibility of going into slightly deeper water is there.  Not like that video in that other post.
It looks cool!!

The air box opening on a stock YJ is, I think, 24" high.  Remember that the front dips down if the bank is sloped.

I got my TJ in water up to its headlights... All the roads where flooded and my jeep was 2 weeks old... there where 3 cars dead in the water and a fire fighter on the other side. I looked at my wife and said "Lets see what this thing can do in water" as the firefighter was yelling and waving at me to turn around I drove in nice and slow. I was suprised there wasent a lot of water that came in. once i got to the other side the firefighter was pissed and said he didnt want to have to come in and get me like the others. even worce my wife was yelling at me the hole time too... I didnt ever let her know I was totly freeked out once I was in and didn't know if I was going to make it across with out hydro lock.... it was my new jeep after all!

Before you pick one up, check the bracket that supports your battery. On TJs 03' and later there should be a hole that will allow you direct access to the inside of your fender. This is important since that is where the ducting that connects the snorkel to you filter box is "supposed" to go.
I only bring this up because when I installed my snorkel last year (on my 03' TJ) I found they had used a solid bracket to support the battery. I ended up having to completely remove the battery and the plate it sits on in order to snake the ducting between the firewall and the support bracket so that I could even connect the snorkel to the filter box.

and SMC4WD is right...it looks reaaaly cool.

aw jeeps in deep watyer.. in our cj3a we have had water to the boot on the trany shifter a few times... but basicaly as long as you keep water out of distribiater and carb they dont raly have any electronics to fry....

but with snorkarls in minnesota it is illegal to have a snorkal unless it comes factory stock on youtr vehicul.. so they are eligal cuz of all the stupid invironmentalists... but at least we dont have emitions testing

I hate to say it but for about i year i was one of those people  :? dont have the $$$$ flow that would allow me to do everything i want to at one time. Thankfully that has changed. you gotta love lift, lights and lettering(okay so that serves no real purpose i but i think its cool)

Just curious why someone would start off with a snorkel first.  Seems like you could get a bunch of other stuff to get started with that would be more practical.  A hi-lift say's a lot about a Jeep.

honestly it was all $$$, i knew what lift i wanted (and actually just installed about two months ago) as well as pretty much all the other components. and i just really liked the look of the snorkel and figured i wanted the first component i added to be one that was non-typical.

My very first mod was a CB... I havent used it off road yet cause I go by my self most of teh time. But to be honest I think the snorkel will be one of my last mods. But you do have to start some where and you do have to look at what you would use most.. for some I sapose a snorkel would be good. But that guy I saw did it cuse it looked cool. There is not to many usefull jeeps im my area, just jeeps with looks. All tho there are some here and there that are made to be used.... there all in jeep clubs tho. I still need to join one of those.

Why does Northridge charge $130 more than the other two suppliers??

I've bought from Northridge before and really like their website...but $100 more??

Is it the same thing??  I really want a snorkel!

Because it pays to shop around. If it saves me money, I don't care what their website looks like.

Me too...I think their website says they will beat other prices though.  Just surprised they are soooo much higher.  Especially for an item that isn't really that exclusive.

EDIT:  Sent a price match email to Northridge as they guarantee the lowest price.  I'll let y'all know what they come back with.

That was quick.....

Northridge4x4
<sales> to me

295 shipped is the best we can do

Oh well.....I guess "Lowest Price Guarantee" doesn't mean that much.

My next email to them:

'm confused....what does "Guaranteed Lowest Prices" mean then?

Really...don't want to be a hard ass, but I would prefer to buy from you since I have in the past.  Thank.

Their reply:

we Gaurentee the lowest price unless it violates the MAP policy that is below MAP. Also that price does not include shipping.  Sorry for the confusion we have this part in stock also

Okay....I'll buy that answer.  They seem to be good folks up there...and you get what you pay for...even if it seems like the exact same thing.
