Put on smaller tires and you will feel like your in a race car  .
Remeber your driving with 4 angry squirrels that like it offroad but not so much on the pavement. Other than a few gains from a larger throttle body your are probably looking at engine upgrade or internal modifications. All discussed in past posts. Drive slow and enjoy the fact that a porsche may go fast it can't go where you can.
They don't have any special wave either .

Dump the stock axles and regear to 5.38:1. Getting rid of the stock axles is a good idea anyway with 35" boggers. They are heavy tires...

Like Jeffy said 5.38 is the proper ratio for heavy 35" like boggers and the 4banger. What exhaust mods have you done? I've seen many cases lately of 4banger owners losing power due to too little of backpressure. Don't be so quick to open up the exhaust.
I removed my catalytic converter and run a turndown right behind the muffler, and I know I don't have enough backpressure. I may add a tailpipe back on and see if that helps out.

Get one of those time machines like in Napoleon Dynamite, go back to when you were buying the 4Auto and make yourself find a 5 speed (or 6 speed with later TJs  Kidding. Regearing is good, too.
I dunno what TJ 4Autos are like, but the friend's YJ 4.0 I6 I drove in the mid 90's had this "Vampire" 3spd Auto -- its like all the power from the bigger engine was just sucked away by that transmission. Hope the TJ4auto on the 4cyl works better.

lots of engine mods. external mods are pricey and don't add much internals are the way to go but gears are cheaper yet and do the job too. save the motor upgrade for when you blow it up.
