Title: WTF is This??

Okay...wtf is this circled thing? This is looking from the front to the back axle....I colored an errent tube that a saw while spraying the Jeep down after a run today.

Is this tube supposed to go over this thing?? The tube looks like it heads up to the rear driver wheel well and back to the fuel tank / fuel filler tube maybe??? Can't see...

Some sort of vacuum hose??...is this the reason my check engine light is always on??

I just installed the 4WD 3" lift last week...the tube can be pushed over this thing if I pull a little bit, but not sure if it will pull right out once I hit a bump.

It relieves pressure that builds up in an axle housing form the heat and moving parts.

It should go up towards the gas neck filler then end.  On the end is a cap/one way valve.

Adjust the line so there is enough slack in it and reconnect it.  If it's still too short replace it with a longer line.

Ya that is sapost to connect together.
Mine keeped poping off after I put my lift on.
I pulled a little slack from on top of the gas tank, altho im not sure where it goese to so i didnt pull to hard.
Just to keep it there I bought a small hose clamp and put that on there nice and tite.

Yup, very important if you drive through any axle deep water. Water in the axle would be very expensive 8)

Fixed....think I'll zip tie it down or clamp it just to make sure.  Thanks.

EDIT:  also going to change the fluid in case any water did happen to get in there....wouldn't be too nice if my whole rear end froze up and exploded.

Good thing to do. Warm up the rear before draining. This mixes up the fluid with the contaminates as well as make the fluid move better. Remember its 75-90 weight oil.
Best way to drain is to pull the diff cover. Oil changing places will only suck some of it out and not all of it will come. However, before you drop the cover, make sure you can open the fill plug. On the D35, it'll be the insert in the diff cover. So that should be simple enough. You may also might want to get another one just in case. There is a lip which holds the fill plug into the cover. It does break down over time due to it being rubber. And if you use a screw driver (or someone else), you can damage the plug. For cheap insurance, get another before you start. If you don't use it, return it.
The tube will need to drain also. The diff fluid feeds lube to the bearings at the axle ends. To drain out of the tubes, use a floor jack to slightly lift one tube at a time. Try to get the bucket directly underneath the diff and as close as possible. Once the majority is out, it will seep, and with any wind, will cover your floor pretty good. I use newspaper to cover the floor area.  
When replacing the diff cover, you could replace the paper gasket, or add sealant. Just make sure the housing is clearn. Good luck.

Damn...that sounds like work...maybe I'm just better off waiting 'til it explodes and replacing the whole axle with a 44... :P

If you think there is contamination in the gear lube, better to do this in the 15 minutes it takes to drain, or pay a lot later. Remember, Mr. Murphy will call on you in any time he wants.

If you prefer, go have Mr. Joe to suck it out and replace the gear lube for $60 at your local lube place. He won't care if it's chocolate or clear as water. He may not even put enough new lube back in.

Yah, sounds like a lot, but it goes rather fast once you do it a couple of times. Do note, it does take longer in the field.

I had water contamination once so much that the bearing on the pinion was so bad that it through the ds off the yoke. Total new rear diff was required....ouch. :x

this reminds me of 2 things.

1st the not filling it enough... my boos got a front locker put in by someone and they didnt put any diff fluid in it  :shock: .. that wasnt good..


and with the cleaning thin that reminds me when i put my looker in and when i cleaned my diff cover to my surprizes it was a crome cover(im like yeah bling..lol) and it is now all nioce and shiny insteadof being black and oily like it was befor...
