Title: 4x4 light
Post by: jcsanders79 on August 15, 2006, 11:43:50 AM
The 4x4 light quit coming on in my 97 TJ.  It worked fine for a while after I lifted it but recently quit coming on.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it.

It's an indicator light. Not a big deal to have or not to have. If you want it working, check the wiring on the t-case. MTL you've got a little dirty connection.

A friend who used to work for a local Jeep dealer (he was a mechanic) told me that when mine stopped working (years ago) that it was because I drove a crappy friggin' Jeep.
He hated working on valley girl Jeeps, and is somewhat jaded.  Anyway, whey I got him to give me a real answer he said it could be a vacuum sending thingie on the t-case.
As was mentioned above, it's a indicator light.  Big deal.  So mine's still out too.
I don't know if any of that helps, but there it is. :)

Happened to me one time, turned out to be a leak in the vacume line about 12" up from the sending unit on the axle. there was a 2" peice of rubber vacume line, replaced the 2" peice of vacume line and "Bingo",  lite worked once more.   :)

The vacuum thing is for the early years Wranglers when they had the quick-disconnect in the front axle. The vacuum switch on the t-case activated the collar on the axle.

For a 97 TJ, there is a simple electrical switch (IIRC) on the t-case. It's in the harness. I'll see if I can remember to shoot a pic of it today.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say they probably replaced the vacuum switch that used to control the front disconnect on YJ's with a vacuum switch that sends a signal to the dash that the transfer case is in 4wd.  It would mean no extra holes required.
