First off, excuse me if my typing is a bit off. I mangled my left hand working on my caddy and it's hard to type.
Ok, I have a 1965 Kaiser cj5 available to me for a few hundred dollars. It's on "fair" shape with no major body troubles, new exhaust, running motor and drive train. It's in stock condition with no modifications made to it. It comes with a best top soft top and no doors. It has not been registered or inspected since 1998 in the state of pennsylvania. Wife says I have to get rid of my beloved caddy if I want the Kaiser because we can't afford three vehicles on our insurance. Can't I just buy this thing and transfer the title without insuring it until it's ready to drive? I could judt have it towed to my house and put it in the garage until it's finished. My guess is that it would take a few months to fix it. Damn, I really want this Jeep.
Any suggestions on holding off the insurance and registeration until it's road worthy? :?: i'd sell the caddy once the cj was ready to drive.
p.s. if I get it I plan on keeping it in stock condition... no lift, no mods. :D

Doesn't sound like your plan to buy it, get it moved to your place so you can do the work has any warts. Once you are running it on the streets, though, you are going to want the insurance. In California, you can tell the DMV that you aren't going to operate the vehcile and they cut you a break for registration fees (course, this changes when you start driving it).
Don't know Pennsylvania too well other than snow skiiing a bunch at Seven Springs and Blue Knob
Once you have three cars, including the Cadillac and the CJ that's in shape to drive, then you get in to the 3 car insurance business. If the CJ was a trail rig only, you might be able to bypass insurance in your state and just tow the thing to your local OHV. Probably not your intent in this case though.
If memory serves--
There used to be this exotic Classic car shop in Arlington, Va. (next to D.C.) where owners of old ferrari and laborghini would store their cars. These guys would drive these vehciles on maybe on Saturdays only, so total driving days would add up to, maybe, 20 days a year. Since the vehicles were stored in an insured garage, the old ferrari/lambo owners were covered in the event of fire or theft on that premises (course, these guys were paying big to use the garage & paying indirectly for this coverage). As far as liability/collision, though, these owners would only call and activate their auto insurance policies when they took their cars on the streets, which was just a few days out of the year. So, they would save a great deal of money vs. insuring their ferrari/lambo like it was a DD.
Like to think that your CJ was going to be like this, but it sounds like it's going to get a bit more use than just 20 days out of the year. But, I wanted to tell you everything I know

chrisfranklin, thanks for the response. In Pa you HAVE to have insurance if your going to drive the vehicle. I'm just not sure if I can wait to insure until I'm ready to drive it or not. This vehicle will be my daily driver. Anyone from PA know how the title/insurance laws go here?

Basically when you take the title down to DMV you can have it setup as "Non Op.' This suspends registration on the vehicle and it means it will not be driven till you reinstate the registration in whihc case you'll just pay the yearly registration. The non-op allows you to suspend the registration till you fix or want to use the vehicle again without having to pay yearly registration fees on someone you won't be driving for a while. It also means you won't have to pay penalty fees for missing a payment.
For insurance I believe every state has required insurance. You will not need to insure it if it's 'Non-op' but you will once you reinstate the registration and want to drive it again.

Great to hear Jeffy. I have every intention to insure it once it operational. I'm going to talk to the guy about buing it tomorrow. If it works out and I purchase it I'll post pics as soon as it's in my garage.....
Thanks for the replies......

Just get it...you'll figure out what you need to do after that
-
or you could be like my family and have 8 wehicukls insured and the insurence people give you alittle brake cuz 2 of them are collectors and there are 8 cars 4 people so not all of them will be driven alot... and they give you a little brake cuz you bring them alot of $$$..

Well..................... I bought it. I'll post pics asap.
-
I posted pics of it in Poseur Central. I'll have it in my garage on Thursday.

Ok... things didn't go down well... First the seller says he has the title in hand. Then he says he has to file for a new one... then he doesn't own the vehicle, his brother does........ I said to hell with it. I'll save my money and myself from the aggrivation. :(

Sounds like a shady deal to me.
-
Yeah, it's a bit upsetting. Then I go past the place today and it's gone. I have to wonder if someone offered him more cash.
-
ouch.. thats harsh.. i thought you had already bot it since you had pics.... but there are many jeeps out there that you can buy. 8) .. jsut have to keep your eyes open

The guy's a Jerk for being so underhanded. It's probably better that you just got out of it. Look on the bright side, you can now look for a flatfender.
-
Chardrc, I did buy... just didn't swap the title name yet. He gave me a reciept for the amount I paid. I got sick of hearing a different story from the guy every day so I demanded my money back in cash, just the way I paid him. I'll just save the cash for now. I'll put it towards my Florida vacation fund. The wife and I are doing Disney late January so it'll be nice to have some extra cash. I'll start looking for another jeep next spring. Jeffy... a flat fender seems like a great idea.
